Rose Bowl fever hits Northwestern’s campii
□ Campus phone lines
were jammed for hours
with ticket requests.
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) —
There’s only a week to go until
final exams at Northwestern,
the school known for having the
brains of the Big Ten. The buzz
on campus, however, isn’t about
tests, it’s about Rose Bowl tick
ets. And how to get them.
With the once hapless Wild
cats heading to Pasadena for the
first time in over 40 years,
pigskin fever has hit with a
vengeance.
“Students are talking about
football. That hasn’t happened
in nearly 50 years,” said John
Paynter, the school’s director of
bands who, as a student, cheered
on the Wildcats at their last
bowl appearance — the 1949
Rose Bowl.
The campus bookstore had to
add more cash registers to han
dle all the sales of Northwestern
sweatshirts, hats, pompons and
T-shirts.
Vases of roses are plentiful
around suburban Evanston. Uni
versity flags flap in store win
dows.

over TCU Saturday.
DALLAS (AP) — Corey
has spent a good portion of hisca
reer trying to prove he can
more than just handoff to the life
of Rodney Thomas and Leelani
McElroy.
The Texas A&M senior has k
tied the label of being a medium
passer, and last Saturday in Amor
Carter Stadium he showed thai
when the karma is correct, he can
be brilliant.
Pullig completed a career hijl
24 passes for 253 yards, including
a 36-yard touchdown pass to A1
bert Connell, in A&M’s 38-6 roul
of the Texas Christian Horne:
Frogs.
It earned Pullig The Associate!
Press SWC Offensive Player of the
Week award.
The Defensive Player of tht
Week laurel went to a Pullig team
mate from the Wrecking Crew de
fense, Brandon Mitchell, who in
tercepted a Max Knake pass
returned it 48 yards for a touch
down.
It was the second time the de
fensive linemen had batted up
pass, caught it and scored a touch
down. He pulled the same trick
last year against James Brown of
Texas.
Connell, a junior college te
fer, said it was the best he ha
seen Pullig throw the ball.
“He was right there even
time,” Connell said.
Pullig became A&M’s careei
yardage passing leader. His
yards moves him ahead of Kevin
Murray, who threw for 6,
yards from 1983 to 1986.
“Corey had a tremendous
game,” said Texas A&M h
coach R.C. Slocum. “That’s v
we’ve been looking for. When
complete passes like that, it makes
all the difference in the world.”
