Smith: I’ll be ready Sunday
□ The Cowboys' star
running back said his
left knee is still sore.
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Em-
mitt Smith walked without a
limp Monday and vowed he
would be ready to play against
the Washington Redskins al
though his sprained left knee
still was sore.
“I think I’ll be all right,”
Smith said, after running
straight ahead during a brief
workout. ‘T’ve got some soreness
to work out. I won’t be trying to
cut or anything until probably
Wednesday.”
Smith, who was injured in
the third quarter of the Dallas
Cowboys’ 24-12 victory over
Kansas City Thanksgiving Day,
has never had this kind of in
jury in the NFL.
“I heard a pop and it scared
me,” Smith said. “It was the
first time something like that
happened since I was in col
lege.”
Smith said he’s not sure the
injury would have happened on
grass.
“I think grass would have
given,” Smith said. “But I can’t
point my finger and say turf
caused the injury.
“I won’t play Sunday if I don’t
feel I can help the team. But I
played with two hamstring pulls
last year when I shouldn’t have
been on the field. I was just
blessed and fortunate this in
jury wasn’t worse. When I heard
the noise (pop) I thought this
could be the end.”
Dallas coach Barry Switzer
said he would let Smith be the
judge of whether he plays
against the Redskins.
“Emmitt Smith knows what
Emmitt Smith can do,” Switzer
said. “We want to win the game.
If Emmitt says he is 100 percent
and can go, he will start.”
Smith is three touchdowns
short of tying John Riggins’ sin
gle-season touchdown mark of
24. Smith has 1,403 yards rush
ing, 171 ahead of Barry
Sanders in the battle for the
NFL rushing title.

fense intercepted Vince

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Corner-
back Dwayne Harper outsmart
ed the old man, Vince Evans,
and the defending AFC champi
on San Diego Chargers have a
slight pulse, after all.
Harper intercepted the 40-
year-old Evans three times, in
cluding consecutive third-quar
ter passes, to help the Chargers
beat the Oakland Raiders 12-6
on Monday night and keep their
slim playoff hopes alive.
Harper ended the Raiders’
last chance when he stepped in
front of Tim Brown to intercept
at the Raiders 28-yard line 56
seconds left.
The victory improved the
Chargers’ record to 5-7 record
with four games to play. San
Diego had lost three straight
and six of its last seven games.
All the scoring came on field
goals, four by John Carney and
two by Jeff Jaeger. The previous
NFL game without a touchdown
was on Nov. 20, 1994, when Ari
zona beat Philadelphia 12-6.
Harper’s first interception set
up a monster 19-play, 80-yard
drive that took 10 minutes, 1
second off the clock and ended
with Carney’s 28-yard field goal
for a 9-3 lead with 1:22 to go in
the third quarter.
The Chargers failed to con
vert Harper’s second pickoff de
spite great field position, and
Harper then made a touchdown
saving tackle after Harvey
Williams’ 60-yard run up the
middle to the San Diego 33. The
drive went 88 yards on 12 plays,
but the Raiders were stopped at
the 8-yard line and Jaeger
kicked a 26-yard to make it 9-6
with 8:18 to play.
The Raiders (8-4) suffered
consecutive defeats for the first
time this season, and remain
two games behind AFC West

downs this season.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) —
Ohio State’s Eddie George has
won the Walter Camp Football
Foundation’s player of the year
award.
George, a 6-foot-3, 227-pound
senior tailback from Philadel
phia, rushed 303 times this year
for 1,826 yards and scored 23
touchdowns.
The Camp award is selected
by Division I-A coaches and
sports information directors and
honors the year’s outstanding col
lege player.
George was presented the
Camp Trophy on Monday at Ohio
State’s Woody Hayes Athletic
Center. He and teammates Terry
Glenn and Orlando Pace will be
honored as Camp All-Americans
at the organization’s banquet
Feb. 17 at Yale.
George is the first Ohio State
player to win the award since
Archie Griffin — now an Ohio
State athletic administrator — in
1974 and 1975.
Camp was a coach at Yale and
Stanford in the late 1800s.
