For advertising information and rates, call The Battalion 848-8696 Page 6 • The Battalion Sports Wednesday • November 22, 1995 Wildcats prove anything possible T his noble insti tution we at tend boasts a student population with origins all across the globe — quite possibly to conceal the fact that the majority of us are standard-issue Texans with necks varying in shades of red. This being the case, most of us through hered ity or by gunpoint, congregate into one of two dif ferent sects of football worship. The first of these denominations is filled with happy, semi-intelli gent folk who cheer on the maroon and white of Texas A&M and the blue and silver of the Dal las Cowboys; the other is saturated with miser able, sadomasochistic souls who prefer the Hous ton Oilers as their professional supplement to the Aggies. Unfortunately, our natural pigskin preferences as Texans hinder us at times from fully appreciat ing the achievements of teams outside our state’s borders. For this reason, I feel compelled to edu cate and enlighten you with the recent successes of the Northwestern Wildcats. First of all, Northwestern University is located a few miles north of Chicago in Evanston, Ill. I tell you this because my idiot roommate be lieved with great conviction that the institution, known for its high academic standards, was locat ed somewhere in North Dakota. Though you may not have known where it was, you’ve hopefully had a chance to become vaguely familiar with the Northwestern football team. You’ve probably seen them on ESPN and on the covey of Sports Illustrated, but do you really know why they deserve the recognition? Take a look at what they’ve managed to pull off this season. In September, Northwestern shocked the coun try by upsetting Notre Dame in South Bend. In October, they beat Michigan at Ann Arbor and two weeks ago they defeated Penn State at home, in front of Wildcat fans who came dangerously dose to a state of nirvana as Northwestern ascended to No. 5 in the nation. Who can blame them? Northwestern has historically maintained one of the most pitiful football programs in the West ern Hemisphere, comparable in gridiron tradition with that of MIT and IBubba Ray’s Barber College, Northwestern beating the above three is like Jerry Cooney whipping Muhammad Ali, like Wiley Coyote finally getting a hold of the Roadrunner. So why are they suddenly good this season? Did some wacko in the chemistry department come up with a pill? What’s propelled Northwestern away from its doormat status is a combination of ingredients that usually makes a good football team: a tough defense; an experienced, smart quarterback; and a solid offensive line. The Wildcats also possess a bonafide stud in sophomore running back Darnell Autry. A career- high 226 yards in last Saturday’s 23-8 win over Purdue gave Autry his 10th straight game over 100 yards this season. Is Autry a Heisman candi date in 1996? To say the Wildcats are just a bunch of hard working, overachievers wouldn’t be totally true, They’ve got some talent as well. With the victory over Purdue, Northwestern finished the season at 10-1 and 8-0 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats, after completing their first 10 win season in school history, also have a shot at the Rose Bowl but have to hope for Michigan to beat No. 2 Ohio State this weekend. With a win, the Buckeyes (11-0) would goto Pasadena on the basis of a better overall record. It’s more than a damn shame that Northwestern and Ohio State can’t face each other to decide the Big Ten championship outright. The Wildcats will probably wind up in Orlando on Jan. 1 playing in the Citrus Bowl against a Southeastern Conference team — which ain’t ex actly a bad gig for a bunch of guys who go to school near the icy shores of Lake Michigan. Now if they could only do something about those nasty purple and black uniforms. Biggio nabs awards □ The Astros' second baseman won a Gold Glove and made the AP All-League team. NEW YORK (AP) — Atlanta Braves’ Greg Maddux won his sixth straight Gold Glove award today, moving into second place behind Bob Gibson for the most won by a pitcher. Gibson won nine Gold Gloves while pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals. There were four-first time win ners this year: Florida Marlins catcher Charles John son, San Diego Padres first baseman Ken Caminiti, Los Angeles Dodgers out fielder Raul Mondesi and Padres out fielder Steve Finley. Atlanta Braves out fielder Marquis Grissom won his third consecutive Gold Glove, and Cubs first baseman Mark Grace won for the third time in four seasons. Second baseman Craig Biggio, who played for the Houston As tros and became a free agent, won his second straight award, as did Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. The awards are voted on by major league managers and coach es and presented by Rawlings. Greg Maddux and Randy John son pitched shutouts Tuesday, be coming the first unanimous picks on The Associated Press All-Star team since 1988. Maddux and Johnson each got 66 votes in nationwide voting by sports writers and broadcasters. Maddux, who won his fourth straight NL Gy Young Award last week, was voted the top right- handed pitcher. Johnson, who won the AL Gy Young Award and took Seattle to its first playoff berth, was voted the top left-handed pitcher. Last year, Maddux was one vote shy of becoming a unani mous pick, missing out when one voter selected Bret Saberhagen. Before this year, the last unani mous selection was Orel Her- shiser at right-handed pitcher after leading Los Angeles to the World Series title. Maddux, who led Atlanta to its first World Series title, won for the fourth straight year. Since the AP began selecting one team in 1982, the only other players to accom plish that feat were outfielders Kirby Puckett (1986-89) and Bar ry Bonds (1990-93). Los Angeles catcher Mike Pi azza and Cleveland outfielder Albert Belle were both one vote short of unanimity. Piazza, Belle and San Diego outfielder Tony Gwynn were the only holdovers from the 1994 team. Boston’s Mo Vaughn won at first base, Houston’s Craig Biggio at second, Cincinnati’s Barry Larkin at shortstop and Colorado’s Vinny Castilla at third. Dante Bichette of the Rockies joined Belle and Gwynn in the outfield, and Seattle’s Edgar Mar tinez was elected at designated hitter. Cleveland’s Jose Mesa was voted the top relief pitcher, getting all but two votes. Piazza was picked for the third consecutive year; Larkin (1990 and 1992) also was elected for the third time, as was Gwynn (1984 and 1994). The closest voting was at sec ond base, where Biggio edged Cleveland’s Carlos Baerga by two votes. Ten players received votes at third base. Castilla got 19 votes, 10 ahead of the second-place fin isher, Atlanta’s Chipper Jones. Other than Piazza, the only other player to get a vote at catch er was Atlanta’s Chipper Jones. Other than Mesa, the only other votes at reliever were for Tom Henke of St. Louis and Mark Wohlers of the Braves. Virtual Ags wreck TCU, Davis in rout Andre who? In what was supposed to be a supreme battle of the two best tailbacks in the Southwest Con ference, the Texas A&M defense made sure only one truly shined. The “Wrecking Crew” held Texas Christian superstar run ner Andre Davis to -13 yards on only six carries — the worst per formance of the Horned Frog’s life — as A&M swamped TCU, 63-7. It was obvious luck was on A&M’s side from the first play of the game as wide receiver Dan ny McCray caught a pass, hob bled it, then caught it again while lying flat on his back fora 29-yard gain. On the very next play, senior quarterback Corey | Pullig hit McCray again, this [ time for a 34-yard touchdown. In his inclividual matchup against Davis, junior tailback j Leeland McPllroy made a mock- I ery of TCU’s defense, carrying the ball 12 times for 161 yards and scoring six touchdowns. McElroy’s big day was opened up by an even bigger day by Pul lig. The senior quarterback com pleted l6-of-28 passes for 504 yards and three touchdowns. In the fourth quarter, he threw a meaningless interception that led to TCU’s only score of the ball- game. A&M’s receiving corps contin ued its magnificent season as su perstar Danny McCray caught eight passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns, and seldom- used tight end Hayward Clay caught five passes for 138 yards. Besides crushing Davis all day, the Aggie defense offered lit tle relief for TCU’s All-SWC quar terback Max Knake. Knake was sacked eight times — thrice by linebacker Keith Mitchell — and had eight passes broken up. The No.2 Aggies now face just | one game, the showdown with the University of Texas on Dec. 2.
