Medicaid linked to higher
death rate in AIDS patients
NEW YORK (AP) — AIDS patients
hospitalized for what looks like a com
mon HIV-related pneumonia are far
more likely to die in the hospital if
they're using Medicaid rather than pri
vate insurance, a study says.
If budget cuts contemplated for
Medicaid take effect, 'This will only
get worse/' said researcher Dr. Charles
Bennett.
The study involved 890 patients
from 56 hospitals in Chicago, Los An
geles and Miami. After taking differ
ences in patient demographics, illness
severity and hospital characteristics
into account, it found that the Medic
aid patients were 73 percent more
likely to die in the hospital than were
patients with private insurance.

Bui Stepheni Moore, Graduate
Student Council president and a
meteorology graduate student,
said she has done some prelimi
nary inquiries with several deans,
and their responses indicated
child care was not a means for ac
quiring more graduate students.
“The number of graduate stu
dents at Texas A&M is decreasing
at twice the national rate,” Moore
said. “Rather than giving child
care, I think giving a $500 grant to
graduate students would benefit
them more because that would pro-

to natural grass.
“The juniors don’t need to fear
that this is the last time [Ele
phant Walk] will be in Kyle
Field,” Pickard said. “Elephant
Walk will be welcome next year
— just stay off the grass.”
Students are also asked to
keep the campus clean for the
Texas game, making sure that
litter and trash are not a result
vide them with in-state tuition.”
Moore said she supports day
care, as long as it is self-support
ing and does not rely on student
tuition and fees. Further discus
sion is needed to determine what
students are willing to do about
child care, she said.
“I feel like this is necessary,”
she said. “I think it’s a great
idea, but are students willing
to spend the money? I think
last week’s [Child Care Issues
Open Forum] showed a definite
interest in child care.”
Moore said she opposes charg
ing all stud.ents for day care
through student fee allocations.
“I would definitely support a
day-care center that is self-sup
porting,” she said.
of Elephant Walk and Bonfire.
Dick Williams, Physical Plant
assistant director for facilities,
said students need to welcome,
alumni and visitors by keeping
Elephant Walk and other tradi
tions clean this year.
“I have to have this campus
looking brand new for the t.u.
game,” he said.
With the extra efforts from all
students, Williams said Elephant
Walk will be a memorable event.
“We’re all going to have a
great day,” he said. “It’s some
thing you’ll remember the rest
of your life.”
