Friday* November 10, 1995 Sports Page 9 • The Battalion Lady Aggies looking to finish season strong □ The Lady Aggies are hoping to gain momentum for the SWC tournament with wins over Rice and SWTS. Staff and Wire Reports It’s chances for a Southwest Conference cham pionship may be history, but the season is far from over for the Lady Aggie Volleyball Team. After suffering a disappointing loss to the University of Texas Wednesday night in which the Lady Longhorns clinched their fourteenth SWC title in 15 years, A&M will have little time to reflect. The Lady Aggies travel to Houston to take on the Rice University Owls in what will be their SWC regular season finale Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The 18th-ranked Aggies (19-5 overall, 7-2 in SWC) will be looking to break the 20-win plateau for the second time in three years and for the seventh time since SWC play began in 1982. More importantly, A&M will be looking to pick up some momentum with wins over Rice (19-8, 4-4 SWC) and Southwest Texas State on Tuesday as it heads into the SWC Tournament next weekend. Kristie Smedsrud, named SWC Co-Player of the Week last week, leads the Aggies with an average 3.91 kills per match and the SWC with 0.43 aces per game. Recording 79 assists in A&M’s four-game vic tory at Texas Tech last week, All-America can didate Suzy Wente broke the all-time A&M and SWC records for assists in a league match. Wente will look to add to her conference all- time career assist total of 5,182 assists against the Owls. A&M owns a 32-4 record against Rice since 1976 and has won its last ten matches against the Owls. The Lady Aggies defeated Rice 15-9, 14-16, 15-6, 15-13 in G. Rollie White Coliseum on Sept. 27. Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M women’s tennis team will close out its fall season this weekend in Austin at the Rolex Southwest Regional Championships on the campus of the Uni versity of Texas. This tournament features teams from Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. This has always been a competitive tour nament and the Lady Aggies are hoping to use this tournament to boost their regional rankings. “It’s going to be an extremely strong tournament because the region’s top teams—Texas, LSU, Arkansas, Rice and us—will have their entire squads in the draw,” A&M Head Coach Bob by Kleinecke said. “It’s also an important tournament because it has tremendous effect on the regional rankings.” In singles play, junior Nancy Dingwall is seeded sixth and se nior Lonna Logan is among the 9-16 seeds. In doubles, Dingwall and Wilson Pate are seeded third and and Logan and Vanessa Rooks are seeded sixth. Last sea son, Dingwall advanced to the sin gles final, and then teamed with Pate to reach the doubles final. “This is our last tournament of the fall, so it’s important for the team to play well,” A&M Head Coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “How we play in this tournament is how we will view ourselves until we re sume play next spring, so you certainly want to use this tournament as a springboard.” Women Event: Rolex Southwest Regional Championships Place: University of Texas Austin friday’s matches will be played on the intramural Courts. Sophomore Carlos Tori is seeded sixth in the A flight of the tournament that fea tures two players ranked among the na tional top 20. Second-ranked Paul Robinson from Texas Christian University is the tournament’s top seed, while 18th-ranked Roger Pettersson of UNLV is the No. 2 seed. Sophomore Eric Elek will also compete in the A flight and drew Robinson in the first round. “There’s no question that Carlos and Eric will have their work cut out for them this weekend,” A&M Head Coach David Kent said. “There are no easy matches in this draw. It’s an extreme ly strong field, but that gives them some good opportunities to win some big matches.” Tori has had success this fall, ' winning the A singles flight at the Hoosier Fall Classic and leading the team with an 11-2 overall record. In the B flight, junior Robbie Krause is the top seed despite this being his first time he has seen action this fall because of a bout with mononucleosis. Freshman Brent Horan is seeded fifth in the B flight. “Robbie was ready for a big fall season before he got sick but I think he’s ready to make up for lost time,” Kent said. “He got his feet wet in doubles at our last tour nament, so I think he’ll be ready to play.” S !2^>ana£ POWDER (PG-13) 11:15 1:45 4:20 7:10 10:15 g£Eee) GET SHORTY (R) 11:20 1:50 4:15 7:00 9:55 G~> GOLD DIGGERS (PG) 12:15 2:40 5:05 7:30 9:45 GHS=D MOONLIGHT & VALENTINO (R) 11:30 2:05 4:40 7:15 10:00 g™> THE SCARLET LETTER (R) 10:30 1:25 4:25 7:35 10:35 gs=d *NO SHOW AT THAT TIME Box Office Opens at 10:30 A.M.
