Page 12 • The Battalion Sports Thursday • November 9, Irvin strives to break record □ Cowboy's Irvin hopes to capture the consec utive 100-yard receiv ing record. IRVING(AP) — Michael Irvin wants to set the NFL record for consecutive 100-yard receiving games Sunday with San Francis co’s Jerry Rice watching. “I’d love to break the record in a game of this magnitude,” Irvin said on Wednesday. “It would be cherry on a pie to do with with Jerry on the side lines. I’d love for Jerry to be there when the an nouncer announces it and hears the cheers.” One of the sidelights to Sunday’s meeting be tween the Dallas Cow boys and the 49ers in a rematch of their NFC championship game is whether Irvin can set one of the few records Rice doesn’t hold. Irvin has 100 yards re ceiving in seven consecu tive games, a mark estab lished in 1961 by Charley Hennigan and Bill Gro- man, both of the Houston Oilers. Irvin talked of his re spect for Rice, who be came the NFL’s all-time leader in career receiving yards last month. “I’d say Jerry is the greatest receiver ever to play the game,” Irvin go one-on-one with Deion Sanders for a change. “That’s an interesting chal lenge for both guys,” said Irvin, who had numerous battles with Sanders when his teammate played for the 49ers and Atlanta Falcons. “I’ll have the best seat in the house for it. I’ll be sitting on my helmet watching that matchup.” In six games against the including a 12-catch, 192-yard day with Sanders defending the 38-28 NFC championship loss to the 49ers. “1 thank San Francisco for setting us straight and making us refocus,” Irvin said. “Hopeful ly, we can return the favor, just have to watch getting emotional for this game. We have to be smart about it.” Irvin admitted he was get ting a kick out of the 49ers four-loss season “I’ve enjoyed seeing ’em struggle," he said Irvin has 66 catches for 1,023 yards this sea son, best in the NFL, He’s averaging 15 yards per catch. He also is just seven catches and 30 yards away, respectively, of setting club records in those categories. With Alvin Ha rper gone, the prevailing theory was that Irvin would be double- teamed and his produc tion would drop. ‘Tve been running different routes and hiding from the double teams,” Irvin said. “The ball is com i ng to me more often with Harper gone. I do appreciate it.” Irvin said the driving force for his season has been the January loss to San Francisco in AP Photo, The Battalion which he lost a fumble. , .... . . . “I haven’t forgotten," Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin avoids Atlanta Falcon i rv i n said. “IFfc an said. “My job is to be the ( #58 ) J essie Tu gg ,e at th e Georgia Dome on Oct. 29. anger you want to take best receiver Sunday.” with you throughout Irvin said it will be interest- 49ers, Irvin has gone over the the season. It slapped us back ing for him to watch Rice have to 100-yard receiving mark twice, to reality.’ Lady Aggies sign four recruits on signing day □ The Lady Aggies signed three forwards and a guard on the first day of early signing. Staff and Wire Reports The Texas A&M women’s bas ketball team signed four players to national letters of intent on the first day of the early signing period, yesterday. “We are thrilled with this ear ly recruiting class,” A&M Head Coach Candi Harvey said. “We feel that these four young ladies each bring something to us that will make us an immediate con tender in the Big 12.” Signees included three for wards Kara Alexander, from Whitesboro, Jennifer Burrows, from Temple, Prissy Sharpe, from Longview and guard Amy Yates from Cleburne. Alexander was named the all district and all-area MVP in 1994 and 1995. She led her team to a 26-9 record and the state tournament where she averaged 24.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, five steals, five assists and 4.5 blocks per game. As a freshman she was voted the all-district and all area Newcomer of the Year. She is ranked first in her class academically and is a Na tional Merit Scholar. Burrows averaged 17.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a junior and made her second appearance on the Texas Basketball Magazine preseason all-state team after being rec- o g n i z e d prior to her sophomore season. Sharpe, an all-state selection as a junior and a sophomore, averaged 16.4 points and 11.6 rebounds last season. In three seasons, Sharpe has scored 1,309 points, grabbed 1,003 rebounds and posted 286 blocked shots. Yates led the Cleburne Lady Jackets to the 1995 Class 4A state title and was an all-dis trict selection as a junior and a senior. Alexander and Sharpe were teammates on the gold-medal winning Southwestern Texas Shooting Stars AAU team at the Junior Olympics this past summer. All four recruits played for the Lady Magic Black AAU team and were southwestern regional champi ons. _______________ “This re cruiting class is highly skilled and athletic,” Harvey said. “Each one of these young ladies shares an absolute passion for the game. They have "We are thrilled with this early re cruiting class." — Candi Harvey A &M Head Coach played AAU basketball togeth er, and they have developed a sense of teamwork. “They all wanted to stay in the state of of Texas to play.
