After running over 3,000
miles in the last year, Texas
A&M cross country runner
Matt Priest is not tired. In
stead he is peaking for the
Southwest Conference Cross
Country Championships be
ginning today in Waco.
“I’ve been shooting for this
all year,” Priest said. “It’s
hard to be spectacular early if
you want to be spectacular
late. I think you have to run
10 to 15 miles a day. You have
to work all year and shoot for
a couple of months.”
Even though Priest’s per
formance earlier this season
was not spectacular by his
standards, it was still pretty
good. In the four meets Priest
has entered this season, he
has finished second in three of
them.
“You really can’t dwell on a
meet in early September,”
Priest said. “You have to time
everything right and not peak
too early. The key is getting
rest because you are going to
be in shape for the race. Right
now, I’m in the best shape of
my life.”
Last year, Priest finished
fourth at the SWC meet and
made it to the NCAA Champi
onships as an individual qual
ifier.
“He’s doing really well this
year,” Texas A&M Cross
Country Coach Greg Hinze
said. “Sometimes runners
think it’s their birthright to
get back to the NCAA’s. But
Matt hasn’t approached it
that way at all.”
Priest said he approaches it
differently because of the way
he feels about running.
“I definitely have a love for
the sport,” Priest said. “Cross
country is a great opportunity

the day he became the NFL’s ca
reer leader in receiving yards,
Jerry Rice was thinking only
about the pass he didn’t catch.
Rice had eight receptions for
108 yards Sunday, bringing his
career total to 14,040 yards and
surpassing James Lofton’s mark
of 14,004 yards.
But Rice was upset at himself
for failing to catch a bomb from
Elvis Grbac late in the San
Francisco 49ers’ 11-7 loss to the
New Orleans Saints. The pass
went off the fingertips of Rice,
who was tightly covered by cor-
nerback Jimmy Spencer.
“The ball was up there and I
hands on it,
