kid,” he said.
White said he was shocked when he
heard about the murder because he nev
er would have thought Shamburger ca
pable of such a violent crime.
James White, a Bryan resident and
member of Hillcrest Baptist Church,
said he and his wife became acquainted
with Shamburger through their
church’s Adopt-an-Aggie program.
Shamburger was a a regular visitor
at James Whites’ house, and he and the
Bryan resident even went camping and
hiking together.
James White said Shamburger,
whom he became close friends with,
confided in him about many things, in
cluding his Christian faith and plans for
the future.
But even though Shamburger contin
ued to visit James White throughout
August and September, White said he
had no idea of the criminal activities
Shamburger was involved with during
this time period, such as using stolen
credit cards.
“I’ve never been more shocked in my
life,” James White said of the moment
he heard about Baker’s murder.
James White, who has stayed in con
tact with Shamburger since the murder,
said Shamburger has always seemed
sincere about his Christian principles.
Christy McIntyre, an A&M junior in
terdisciplinary studies major, became
friends with Shamburger when they
were both counselors for the Hillcrest
Baptist Youth Group.
McIntyre said Shamburger some
times was a pest, insulting others in a
joking manner.
“He wasn’t the most popular person,
but he did have friends,” she said.
Shamburger seemed to be in normal
spirits in August, when they both went
on a Hillcrest Baptist Church retreat,
McIntyre said.
McIntyre said she saw Shamburger
the day before the murder and invited
him to go dancing Sept. 30,:
night of the murder.
Shamburger said he didt
what his plans were yet, butwoii;
her back and let her know. Met;
said he never returned her call.
All of the witnesses said the);
maintained their relationships
Shamburger throughout the trial
will continue to despite his convict;,
Closing arguments will begin at
a.m. in the 361st District Count;:;
the Brazos County Courthouse.
