Page 4 • The Battalion Thursday • October 19, The Jesus and Mary new sound in bitter Chain matures wit /-/ate Rock 'N' Rol ursda Album Revi* The Jesus and Mary Chain Hate Rock f N f Roll American Records ★★★ 1/2(out of five) By Amy Uptmor The Battalion The Jesus and Mary Chain has long been known as a lovq/hate kind of band. People who have heard the band either love it or hate it. This is understandable. After all, it’s difficult to have an affec tion for noise, and The Jesus and Mary Chain is one of the most notoriously noisy bands ever. The band’s characteristic feed back sound has always been a bit of an acquired taste. But with its latest album, Hate Rock ’N’ Roll, The Jesus and Mary Chain has made it self a little easier for the mass es to like. Fans of this legendary indus trial band should not be scared by such developments. The Jesus and Mary Chain has sacrificed nothing on Hate Rock ‘N’ Roll. Its characteristic sound is still there, but it has added a melodic dimension. The band is letting its creativity dominate the album this time around. There are many diverse sounds on the album. While sacrificing some of the edge to its sound, the band has sacrificed nope of the edge in its music and writing. The album’s ti tle song is the greatest insult to corporate rock in years. Lines like “I ■$■■■■■■ love MTV/ 1 love it when they’re setting on me” and “I hate rock and roll/ 1 hate it ‘cause it f-ks with my soul” deserve respect. Such words come proudly from a band that has developed a following — even an ever-corpo- rate spot on the 1992 Lolla- palooza bill — despite being con sistently ignored by such corpo rate music monsters as MTV. Just because the Chain is growing does not mean that it has lost its touches of brilliance. Reminiscent of “Head On.” “Something 1 Can’t Have” is the brightest, most danceable song the band has put out in years. But that classic sound is fol lowed by “Bleed Me,” a ballad that resembles REM more than any Jesus and Mary Chain song — but not quite as gentle, with the lyrics, “Take what you need and leave me to bleed. There’s diversity for you. Speaking of diversity, there’s “Teenage Lust — Desdemona Mix,” a dance song that has the feel of a remixed R&B song with a hard-core edge. This band actual ly pulls such an unusual mix off in classic form. There’s more hate and despair in this album than just its title. Most of the songs deal with dark themes of hopelessness and de spair. But The Jesus and Mary Chain has never been known to be a band to listen to when you’re in need of cheering up, so such themes come as no surprise. This dark theme is especially apparent on “33 1/2,” an eerie, slow song that kicks off with “Got no direction / No resurrec tion/ Got no religion/No space to live in.” Nevertheless, ifsa great song, and hey, someone needs to be depressed inthelo musical absence ofTheCure. Those who have alwaysli The Jesus and Mary Chain should love this album. Ifsa little different, but equallyas good or better than any other album it has had. And for those who havehearil The Jesus and Mary Chain hated its sound, HateRock'H Roll might actually be the ah bum that will win them over, Dr. Andy DENT Dd ; Thursday ence 1 ny of our y It is £ pro 1 Bo Andrews, a folk performer, is playing at Sweet Eugene's House of |at;B’ ^ can valu The MSC Film Society is presenting The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain in Rudder Theater at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The MSC Film Society is presenting Congo in Rudder Auditorium at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Head West, a rock band, is playing at 3rd Floor Cantina.
