Mark Baker said he ran to his house and locked the door to wait for the police to arrive. Robert Price, College Station police officer, told the jury he re sponded to a call at 3:41 a.m. and went to Baker’s house. “The front door was open and I yelled inside to see if anyone was in there,” Price said. “I went around to the west side of the house and there were two windows,” Price said. “There were flames in this room and I shone my flashlight inside and could see a body on the bed.” Price said he remained at the window until firefighters were in side the room. Price ran the license plate of the white car, which was registered to Deena Shamburger. He and anoth er officer went to Deena Sham- burger’s residence and discovered that her brother, Ron, lived next door. The two officers then searched Shamburger’s residence and found he was not there. The prosecution then called Steve Smith, an officer and arson investigator for College Station, to testify about how the fire was set and burned. Smith testified that Baker’s body was burned from head to toe, the worst at her feet. He said gaso line had been poured in streams and he found pour patterns at the bedroom, hall and kitchen. Barry Wilkerson, a College Sta tion police officer and a crime scene technician, was questioned by the defense about blood stains and oth er evidence found at the scene. Wilkerson said he observed a large contact wound in the center of Baker’s forehead that was con sistent with gunshot wounds. He said there were blood patterns on the wall and headboard behind Baker’s head. Wilkerson said Baker had been moved after she was shot because of the location of the blood stain. Some of Baker's hair had been cut and was on the bed, Wilkerson said, and when the body was moved, two knives, a pair sors, tape and more hair wer tJ derneath her. “There are blood stains a the tip of the knife blade: hair in the blood,” be said.
