Malon Southerland, vice president for student af fairs, said the idea was gener ated by Dr. Ray Bowen, A&M president, and other adminis trators when they were dis cussing the fee increase. “[Bowen] felt it was neces sary to offset the impact of the fee increase by awarding grants through financial aid,” Southerland said. “Thousands of dollars were spent to reduce the burden on students.” The grants were awarded on a need basis, which was split into three categories.The categories were no family con tribution; $1-2,100 worth of family contributions and $2,100 worth of family contri butions and above. Students were placed in a need category, and funds were distributed. Undergraduates received 85 percent of the funds; graduate students re ceived 11 percent; and profes sional school students rece- 4 percent.
