owner Bud Adams has rejected
Houston Mayor Bob Lanier’s
offer to build an open-air sta
dium as too late and too hot.
Adams has been negotiating
with Nashville, Tenn., officials
about moving the team to a
76,000-seat, open-air stadium
for the 1998 season.
“We’re not going to play (in
the Astrodome) anymore,”
Adams told Houston
station KRIV-TV on
Tuesday. “We can’t
play in the As
trodome. I told them
that a year ago.”
Adams campaigned
for more than a year for Hous
ton taxpayers to build a new
domed stadium with lucrative
luxury boxes. City and county
officials repeatedly said they
couldn’t afford the estimated
$235 million.
Adams, speaking Tuesday
from the NFL meetings in At
lanta, said building an open-
air stadium in Houston is “not
a feasible thing” because of
the hot and humid weather.
He added that Tennessee fans
are used to doing without air

severed ear for Chargers’ fan
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A 45-year-
old man had his ear reattached af
ter it was bitten off by an Oakland
Raiders fan and spit back in his
face during a fight at a sports bar.
Michael Burrows was released
from the University of California,
San Diego Medical Center on
Monday. Surgeons rejoined the
piece of ear, which measured 2
inches by 1 inch.
Police said Burrows and Carl
Anthony Ditmars, 30, scuffled on
the floor at Fat Freddie’s in San
Diego on Sunday after the Charg
ers defeated the Philadelphia Ea
gles 27-21.
Ditmars is an avid Raiders fan
who “let everyone know about it,’
witnesses said. Burrows told Dit
mars to wait until the Chargers
again played the Raiders whenDit
mars allegedly attacked.
Police were told Ditmars bitoff
the large piece of Burrows’ right ear
and then spit it back at him.
The severed ear was placed
on ice and given to paramedics,
