struck out 12 over eight-plus in
nings as the Texas Rangers im
proved their wild-card position
with a 6-1 decision Thursday
night over the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Rangers moved within
one game of the AL wild-card
leaders, the New York Yankees
and Seattle Mariners, with their
fifth straight victory. The Blue
Jays lost their sixth straight.
Witt (3-2), who struck out 12
in July as a member of the Flori
da Marlins, set a Rangers sea-
son-high with his strikeout total.
Witt, who didn’t walk a batter,
left after giving up the Blue
Jays’ seventh hit starting the
ninth. Dennis Cook finished up.
Juan Guzman (3-13) gave up
three runs on 12 hits over eight
innings as he suffered his eighth
straight loss. Guzman, who
struck out three and walked one,
has not won in his last nine
starts, dating back to July 14,

Houston Oilers want to run the
football and can’t. The Cleveland
Browns want to run, too, but
stacked defenses have kept them
up in the air.
“We’d like to run the ball bet
ter, but basically, the way it’s
turned out, we’ve got some
teams come up and jam us on
the line of scrimmage
and gang up on the run
ning game,” Browns
coach Bill Belichick said.
The Oilers (1-1) will
bring a more balanced
attack into Sunday’s
game. The Browns (1-1)
have gained only 130 yards
rushing and gone to the air for
557 yards.
Cleveland’s rushing total is
the lowest in the NFL, while the
passing game has blossomed un
der Vinny Testaverde, second in
the AFC in passing. The Browns
rank seventh in the NFL in
passing.
“Fortunately, that’s opened
some other things,” Belichick
said. “If that’s the way we’re go
ing to be played, then that’s the
way we have to adjust. I’d be
more disappointed if we couldn’t
do either one.
“As long as we can do one or
the other and they can’t take
both of them away, we should
have a chance.”
The Oilers moved away from
the rup-and-shoot offense this
season, hoping to be a better
running team. But the million
aire-laden offensive line hasn’t
jelled and coach Jeff Fisher
wants a quick change.
“You look at the films and
there are some good things hap
pening on our offense,” Fisher
said. “We’re going to get better
and what we have to realize is
we can’t afford to wait much
longer.”
“We’ve got some good players
up front that now have
got to start eliminat
ing those mistakes,
and we’ve got to exe
cute more.”
Gary Brown rushed
for 101 yards ih the
season opener against
Jacksonville, but the
Oilers got only 42 yards, 1.8 per
carry, in a 34-17 loss to Pitts
burgh on Sunday. Houston has
202 yards rushing this season
and 296 passing.
Belichick isn’t sure the
Browns can build on their run

aggressive 46 defense.
“They’ll present a big chal
lenge,” Belichick said. “We’ve
had a lot of trouble with them
down there in the past with
their multiple coverages, blitz

corruption as part of the

Sherman: Walking the line

Sherman began coaching at
the collegiate level in 1981 at
the University of Pittsburgh
and spent time at Tulane and
Holy Cross before coming to
Texas A&M in 1989.
After four seasons in
charge of one of the best of
fensive lines in the Southwest
Conference, Sherman left Col
lege Station at the end of the
1993 season to join Terry
Donahue’s staff at UCLA.
After only one season in
Westwood, Sherman and his
family decided to head back.
“We made the move out to
California physically but just
never really made it emotional
ly,” said Sherman. “We have too
many strong ties here at A&M.”
Sherman is highly regarded
by his offensive line, and they
are pleased that their coach
found his way back to College
Station.
“Everybody around here re
spects Coach Sherman because
he’s one of the best in the busi
ness at what he does,” said junior
All-Southwest Conference right
guard Calvin Collins. “He could
move up to the NFL and be one of
the best up there as well.”
