AUSTIN (AP) — Officials and students at the
University of Texas at Austin are among the many
nationwide waiting to see how Congress may
change the federal student loan program.
Republicans in Congress are proposing changes
in the program that would raise the amount stu
dents would have to repay upon graduation.
President Clinton, about 70 White House offi
cials and other Democrats are touring the nation
to decry Republican efforts to change the loan pro
gram and cut other education programs.
“If Congress approves these changes, the
