NEW YORK (AP) — Der rick May’s two-run homer in the sixth broke a tie and Houston starter Donne Wall earned his first major league victory Tuesday night as the Astros held off the New York Mets 8-6. Wall (1-1), making his sec ond major league start, gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked none. Astros reliever Mike Hen- neman replaced Dave Veres with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth with Hous ton leading 8-3. Henneman threw a run-scoring wild pitch and Joe Orsulak hit a two-run single before Jose Vizcaino grounded into a double play to end the game and give Henne man his fifth save. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lawrence Phillips pleaded in nocent Tuesday to a charge that he struck his former girl friend, and coach Tom Os borne said he thought the Ne braska star initially was so distraught he might harm himself. In a case that has rocked the defending national cham pions, the Heisman Trophy contender also pleaded inno cent to misdemeanor charges of trespassing and destruction of property. “Not guilty,” Phillips said calmly when asked for his plea at Lancaster County Court in an appearance that lasted less than five minutes. Day: Tougher SWC foes could make for a Fiesta Continued from Page 7 up with a thrashing of Colorado State last week. Climbing to No.9 in the AP poll, Colorado will more than likely move to 3-0 this week as they take on North east Louisiana at home. The Ag gies’ Sept. 23 contest in Boulder will be their ultimate regular season test. Two weeks ago, A&M found beating LSU to be a tough chore. There is a reason for that: LSU is a solid football team. Last week end, the Tigers followed up their A&M loss with a 34-16 trouncing of Jackie Sherrill’s Mississippi State squad. First-year LSU Head Coach Gerry DiNardo has his team poised for success this season and the better the Tigers do, the better A&M looks for beat ing them. The Aggies’ Southwest Confer ence opponents do not look too shabby, either. The Oct. 7 game at Texas Tech will be a fitting challenge. The Red Raiders, three touchdown underdogs to Penn State last week, came within a last-second field goal of shocking the No.4 ranked Nittany Lions in Pennsylvania. Baylor, Texas Christian and Rice are all off to 1-0 starts, and the Bears and the Red Raiders are a win or two away from crack ing the Top 25. Of course you can’t forget Texas. The hated Longhorns Eire currently checking in at a re spectable No. 15 in the AP, and a win over your bitter rival always looks good to pollsters. That leaves Tulsa, A&M’s op ponent this week. While the Gold en Hurricane isn’t exactly being mentioned in the same breath as Florida State or Nebraska; the Aggies must recognize the pit- falls of overlooking this team. Four seasons ago A&M built a 28-10 halftime lead over Tulsa in a non-conference game and then sat back and watched the Hurricane strike. The Aggies lost 35-34, their only regular season loss that season. Maybe the 1995 schedule isn’t quite as shaky as it seems. In the SWC’s farewell season, every con ference team will be raising its play while non-conference gEimes against LSU and Colorado will impress pollsters. Hopefully, an undefeated regular season mixed with a little luck will make all this schedule talk seem irrele vant. Then, the Aggies’ most important game will be played on January 2, 1996, in the Fiesta Bowl. Chick-fil-A Now Offers The Whole Nine Yards!
