Page The Battalion Sports September 8,! Ensminger Continued from Page 7 doubt that the key to diversifying (an of fense) is to have experience at quar terback.” Ensminger has had plenty of expe rience coaching successful quarter backs. He coached Georgia quarter back Eric Zeier, who holds 61 school records and is now a backup to Vinny Testaverde for the Cleveland Browns. “He has definitely been around,” senior quarterback Corey Pullig said. “He coached Zeier, and he uses that to help me with what I can do.” In addition to coaching some of the top college quarterbacks, Ensminger played quarterback at Louisiana State University. He was named team MVP in 1979 and ended his career as the second leading passer in school history. Ensminger believes that playing collegiate football has helped him re late to his players. “I have a great relationship with all the quarterbacks,” Ensminger said. “They are free to suggest ideas, and I want to hear them. They must understand that they have to know every position on the field. “I’m very demanding, but I under stand certain things.” One of Ensminger’s biggest accom plishments since arriving at A&M is the improvement of the offensive line. Last year’s line lacked experience, but Ensminger believes that a year of seasoning will show in 1995. “We threw very well last year, but we didn’t run as well,” Ensminger said. “But we have more experience in the offensive line; last year we had only one guy with experience. Now, they have gotten used to each other and have more experience together.” What has made Ensminger differ ent is his previous experience in lead ership positions. Ensminger was the offensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech University for two years before moving on to Georgia. “He is the kind of leader he is be cause he knows what it takes,” sopho more center Koby Hackradt said. “He is always on top of us to work until we get it right. ” Ensminger has enjoyed his first year at A&M; and is looking forward to a great future with the Aggies. “I came to A&M because it was a good move for my family,” Ensminger said. “There is no reason for me to move from A&M. I want to stay as long as possible. “This is a dream come true. I’ve al ways wanted to coach at the Division I-A level, with a top five team and win a national championship.” Parker Continued from Page 7 The Battalion JL JL JL-A—s MUrj. * M A a ^ Classified Ads Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building 845-0569 Or FAX us at 845-2678 Business Hams Call or visit 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building Deadline l p.m. prior to publication < o accepted Q. Las week against Louisiana State Parker rushed five times forlS yards in limited action. “I’m excited (about Parker),’ Ensminger said. “He plays ten tatively, but pays attention. He studies and is at every practice. Playing alongside Leeland (McElroy) has helped him work harder, and will help him in the future.” Besides running back, Park er also lines up with McElroy as one of the starting kickoff returners. He said just watch ing McElroy has helped him at both positions. “I take in mentally things that he does, which has made me a better ballplayer,” Parker said. “I look at him run and say ‘Well, he cut right there,’ and I take it down mentally. Notices ARLINGTON (AP) — Roger Pavlik threw a three-hitter for his first career shutout as the Texas Rangers halted the Chicago White Sox' eight-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Thursday night. Pavlik (8-9) had lost three of his previous four decisions, but he was in command against a hot-hitting White Sox lineup that was batting .342 with a .558 slugging percentage over the eight-game streak, Chicago's longest since 1991. The complete game was Pavlik's first of the season and fourth of his career. Pavlik pitched out of a ninth-inning jam by making Robin Ventura ground out to short with runners on first and second. Texas ended a four-game losing streak and moved within two games of idle Kansas City in the AL wild-card race. Stars ink center Gagner IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Stars signed center Dave Gagner to a two-year contract Thursday, avoiding a scheduled arbitration hearing. No terms of the deal were disclosed for the 30-year-old Gagner, who led the Stars with 14 goals, 28 assists and 42 points last year. Gagner is a nine-year veteran. On Saturday, he will stand beside her at the altar in what seems as much a merger as a marriage, uniting one of figure skating's biggest money-makers with a man once ranked among the most powerful in sports. "We rarely see this kind of profes sional relationship turn into a mar riage," said Jeff Jensen, sports market ing reporter for Advertising Age. The wedding, details of which have been a closely guarded secret, is to take place at the Church of the Covenant in Boston's tony Back Bay section. About 230 guests have been invited, including 100 members of Kerrigan's family, although most of Kerrigan's skating comrades will be competing in Windsor, Ontario, and unable to attend. A reception is to fol low at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge. P Cl ]\ Meet New People The Fun Way Today! 6100 ext. 9125. $2.99/min., must be 18 yrs Co. NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Sam pras charged into the U.S. Open semifinals Thursday, closing out game after game with aces that served as exclamation points, from a 128 mph "Hello!" to a 128 mph "See ya later!" Among his 22 aces through a whipping wind, seven flew past a dizzy Byron Black on the last point of Sampras' service games, leaving the Zimbabwean with the memory of brute power that lingered in his mind when he stepped up to serve so much less emphatically. Sampras punctuated the end of his 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-0 romp with an ace that was just as fast as his first serve, showing he was no less tired at the end of the 1 hour, 45 minute semifinal tuneup as he was at the start. wor ean tha1 efit TAJ' Tex toT T get; The: T Cha Wou tnur Syst T stan ticip deni I out i Poin H to g ( gent lieve Prop is, ir T tren stud bodj N Stud Advi Stud stud &oar I) this
