Page 14 • The Battalion Cajvipus Friday • August 25, Bowen Continued from Page 1 not giving the proper grades. “Professors would often give students a WP when they were actually failing a class,” Pater son said. “We just decided to eliminate the WP/WF all together.” Other revisions to rules and regulations will go into effect this fall. A change to the attendance poli cy will require students to submit proof of an ex cused absence within two working days of the last date of the absence. The revised attendance policy also more clearly defines excused absences. This summer, senators de bated over this issue and whether A.P. Beutel Health Center was issuing proof of treatment or proof that a student had been at the health center that day. Cantrell said the health center will work to make the forms students return to professors less ambiguous. Paterson said the changes will force students to demonstrate that they have missed a class for a valid reason. A section to the University’s rules and regulations on student grievance procedures was also added. The new section combines procedures from oth er areas of the rules and regulations and defines policies for discrimination, disability accommoda tions in academic programs, sexual harassment, grade disputes and scholastic dishonesty. Cantrell said that each year a large number of changes are made to the rules and regulatiJ and this year's changes are well-rounded. “Things that come from the rules and regi I tions committee have a wide group of people wj ing at them, so [the rules] are very representar of what will work,” he said. Other changes to the rules and regulate include: • redefining policies regarding scholastic c*! bation. • changing the dates for refunds of the hous I deposit. THe Battalion Senate: Pay raise resolution must be approved by Bowei Continued from Page 1 barriers to being accepted as respected members of their de partments.” The Senate resolution states that a procedure should be es tablished in each department for awarding raises to lecturers who meet standards of merito rious services and that all lec turers should be made aware of these policies. Dr. Kurt Ritter, faculty sen ator and speech communication professor, said an established system of merit raises will show respect to lecturers. “It’s important that we sup port the idea that if we have lecturers who are doing a mo mentous job, they should have a chance to get a raise,” he said. The Senate resolution also states that lecturers who are promoted to senior lecturer should receive an au- tomatic raise, just as raises are received for promotion within the professorial ranks. “To get that promo tion without a raise is, I think, a mistake,” Ritter said. Currently, decisions about raises for lectur er promotions are left to each department. Lecturers are hired speech communication a: English, is a Pulitzer Prh winning playwright. Every few years, a professor’s tenure is reviewed on the basis of achievements in teaching, re search and service. Although some lecturers do research, Kaplan said teaching is the full-time responsibility of most lecturers. “Lecturers are primarily hired as teachers and hired be cause they teach very, very well,” she said. The different categories of lec turers includes assistant lectur ers, who Eire typically pre-doctoral and lecturers, who usually have their doctorates. Lecturers may be promoted to a higher position of senior lecturer. Another category is distin guished lecturer, which is a rare title given to someone with outstanding accomplishments. For example, Charles E. Gor- done, distinguished lecturer of and/or University committee, should be eliminated.
