Hiroshima ceremony
marked by peace appeals
HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — With
tears and prayers for the dead whose
corpses filled the rivers of Hiroshima
half a century ago, thousands of people
set glowing lanterns afloat Sunday
night, capping a day of tributes to vic
tims of the world's first atomic attack.
The day began with a ceremony to
mark the moment - 8:15 a.m. - when
the bomb exploded over Hiroshima on
The Battalion
Aug. 6, 1945, turning the city into an
inferno of flame, superheated wind and
radioactive dust.
All told, 140,000 people died in the
explosion and over the following six
months — half Hiroshima's wartime
population.
On Sunday, about 50,000 people
packed into the city's Peace Park —
built on the wasteland left near the cen
ter of the blast — to hear appeals for
the abolition of nuclear weapons and
frank admonitions that Japan must face
up to its own wartime aggression.
Police arrest reputed
leader of Cali drug cartel

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) —- Police
raided a Cali apartment and caught the
reputed boss of the world's biggest drug
gang in his underwear Sunday, days af
ter the president's election campaign
was accused of taking $6.1 million
from the cartel.
Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, alleged
leader of the Cali cartel, was arrested
before dawn along with his ex-wife, a
bodyguard, a chauffeur and a maid.
Rodrigpez immediately denied traf
fickers contributed to President Ernesto
Samper's 1994 campaign.
Rodriguez is the sixth leader of the
Cali cartel to wind up behind bars in
two months. The gang is believed to
control 80 percent of the world's co
caine market.
Second major Serb town
falls to Croatian army
ation Storm” took another key rebel-
held town Sunday. As Croats celebrat
ed, tens of thousands of Serbs fled in
the biggest refugee exodus in the for
mer Yugoslavia in four years of war.
The fall of Petrinja, which came a
day after Croatian troops retook the
rebels' self-proclaimed capital of Knin,
further crushed rebel dreams of estab
lishing a separate Serb state.
Fierce fighting continued across
much of the Serb-held region, a crescent-
shaped land that hugs northwestern
Bosnia, and which Serbs call Krajina.
But the fall of Knin and Petrinja,
combined with the capture of the
strategic Udbina airfield and signs that
the Serb-led Yugoslav army would not
intervene, led the Croats to predict
quick victory.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The
grand jury investigating the Oklahoma
City bombing will return three indict
ments by Friday's deadline, naming
Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols and

Continued from Page 2
If you want to know about
hype, talk to the expert. His
name is Heisman, er, Leeland
McElroy and he is one of the fron
trunners for the coveted trophy.
McElroy is finally alone in the
A&M backfield after having to
split time with Greg Hill and
Rodney Thomas during his first
two seasons as an Aggie.
Head Coach R.C. Slocum de
clared that McElroy will touch
the ball more than any Aggie
back since Darren Lewis.
McElroy will receive most of
his handoffs from quarterback
Corey Pullig, whose first three
years have passed quickly. Some
might say Pullig hasn’t lived up
to the gaudy expectations that
came with him from Deer Park
High School, but who can argue
with his 27-1-1 regular season
record as a starter?
Part of A&M’s problem in the
past was that Pullig was only as
good as his receivers, who have
not been great over the years.
But A&M recruiters have ad
dressed this problem over the
past two years, and suddenly
A&M seems to be bursting at the
seams with receivers.
First and foremost among the
r-edbiving corps is senior Chris
Sanders, who used his size and
leaping ability to have a breakout
season in 1994. Sanders will most
likely be joined on the first team by
Aaron Oliver, a redshirt freshman
who was injured last season. Oliv
er, the son of former Texas Ranger
A1 Oliver, is smaller and quicker
than Sanders, so the two should
complement each other well.
As much attention as McElroy
and the A&M offense are getting
this preseason, “The Wrecking
Crew” defense somehow seems to
get better each and every season.
Gone from the team are All-
American linebacker Antonio
their Army buddy Michael Fortiil
McVeigh's lawyer predicted Sunday
The addition of Fortier, whoa

Jones.
"That is to say, they've alrea;
made a deal and he is being*:

duce his testimony for the gove-
ment,” Jones said in a telephone
terview from his home in Enid.
