Croats,
rebel Serbs
agree to
negotiate
□ NATO ambassadors
threatened airstrikes
against Serb rebels if
they continue to at
tack U.N. 'safe areas.'
KNIN, Croatia (AP) — Serb
and Croatian forces warily
agreed Tuesday to return to ne
gotiations, while NATO expand
ed its threat of airstrikes against
Serb rebels to protect all remain
ing U.N. “safe areas.”
Tensions exploded last week
when Croatia sent thousands of
troops into western Bosnia, where
they made stunning advances
against rebel Serbs.
Croatia, which said it was re
sponding to a plea from Bosnia’s
Muslim-led government to help
defend the northwestern Muslim
enclave of Bihac, has used the
advance to move its forces
through Bosnia to threaten the
self-proclaimed rebel Serb capi
tal of Knin in Croatia.
Despite continued fighting,
Croatian and Serb representa
tives agreed to hold talks Thurs
day in Geneva, the United Na
tions announced.
At a meeting in Brussels, Bel
gium, NATO ambassadors
threatened airstrikes against
Serb rebels if they attack Bihac
or any other U.N.-declared “safe
areas” for refugees.
NATO issued a similar threat
last week to protect the Gorazde
“safe area” after the Serbs cap
tured two other U.N. enclaves in
eastern Bosnia.
In Washington, the House of
Representatives followed the
Senate by voting Tuesday to lift
the U.N. arms embargo against
Bosnia so the Muslim-led gov
ernment could better defend it
self. President Clinton has
vowed to veto the measure, say
ing it would force U.N. peace
keepers to leave Bosnia — and
lead to the introduction of Amer
ican ground troops to help in the
evacuation.

NEW YORK (AP) — In the sec

The widely anticipated pact
came a day after the Walt Dis

Capital Cities-ABC Inc. for
about $19 billion.
Westinghouse, based in Pitts

CBS finished behind ABC and

Scholars

During Spring 1995 the Monsanto Company initiated gra:
incentive awards for graduating seniors, Hogg said.
These $3,000 scholarships are awarded each year to five ste
who are pursuing graduate degrees in chemistry.
“It is our intention to try and award at least three of tl
scholarships to minority students,” Hogg said.
Hogg said he believes the incentives will draw more minoril;
dents to the chemistry department.
Since his arrival in 1985, Hogg said the number of 111®
chemistry majors has risen from 10 percent to 25 percent.
“We have about 240 chemistry majors,” Hogg said. “Oft:
about 50 or 60 are minority students.”
Sophie Wilkinson, a news representative for ACS, said that
a worldwide membership exceeding 150,000, the society is all
raise more than $10 million in dues annually.
“The society will spend over $5 million dollars over the next
years toward the minority scholars program,” she said. “It is it
esting to note that the society spends more on its scholarships,
lications and programs than it receives in dues each year.”

Steve Harness, an AT&T

slamming occurs for a number
of reasons.
“It can happen erroneously
