The software for Electronic Phone
book was written at the University of
Illinois and made available to A&M stu
dents three years ago.
Students can access Electronic
Phonebook through Gopher and the
World Wide Web.
“Gopher is a simple menu driven sys
tem,” Fleitman said. “You just choose a
menu item and get more menu items.
The World Wide Web is a way to get in
formation on the Internet through a di
rect address or a hypertext link.”
Fleitman said to use a hypertext link
a student can just click on a word and it
will go to a different document. He said
if a student has a Vax, Unix or Virtual
Machine (VM) account, then the stu
dent types in “gopher.”
If a student is using Windows in a
computer lab on campus, then the stu
dent should go to the communications
group and click on the gopher or web
icon, he said.
Dr. John McClain, senior systems
analyst for the Academic Computing
Service, offered advice for students
about Electronic Phonebook.
“People across the world can locate
information about students at A&M
through the Electronic Phonebook, and
because of this it is very helpful if stu
dents list their e-mail address in this
Phonebook,” McClain said.
The Electronic TAMU Community
Calendar is another service CIS pro
vides to students.
“This calendar lists meetings, confer
ences, ceremonies and holidays,” Fleit
man said. “Students and departments
can add an event or delete an event if it
is canceled.”
The electronic calendar began about
a year ago after University Relations
stopped producing a University-wide
calendar, Fleitman said.
A&M students can access the calen
dar through the World Wide Web and
Gopher.
Fleitman said student and Universi
ty department input is necessary for the
calendar to be successful.
