Page 6 • The Battalion Fhursday • June 29,15: c Japan, U.S reach auto agreement GENEVA (AP) — Dodging imminent American sanctions, Japan promised Tuesday to open its long-shielded auto market to the United States in a sudden agreement that staved off an outright trade war between the world’s two largest economies. The real effects of the agree ment could take years to deter mine. But President Clinton hailed it as a breakthrough that will give the United States ac cess to Japan’s mammoth auto market and create thousands of American jobs. The pact that culminated two years of negotiations came hours before Washington’s deadline to impose 100 percent tariffs on 13 Japanese luxury car models, including Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura lines. The talks had long ap peared doomed. “We all went from pes simism to the agreement with out stopping at optimism,” said U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor. Aware of the high domestic political stakes, both sides claimed victory. Clinton said the agreement would lead to a major increase in sales of U.S. automobiles and spare parts to Japanese companies. The United States dropped its threat to impose the sanc tions against $5.9 billion worth of luxury Japanese automo biles, due to take effect at mid night Wednesday. What may have clinched the governmental accord was the United States’ dropping its in sistence on numerical targets to measure increasing sail Japanese Trade Ministerl| taro Hashimoto said the ac; excluded targets. Inst: Washington accepted "voh tary” plans by top Japanese companies to boost purchase, “This agreement is specif,: is measurable. It will act: real, concrete results,” Cfc | said in Washington. “I have sisted on it from the start.” The Battalion Classified Ads Phone: 845-0569 / Fax 845-2678 Office: Room 015 (basement) Reed McDonald Building 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Business Hours $ 10 for 20 words running 5 days, if your merchandise is priced $ 1000 or less (price i— must appear in ad). Tutors MAIN: Northgate will remain uniqu Continued from Page 1 Holick’s, a long-time Northgate business, said it is a shame the construction’s timing has nega tively affected newer businesses. “It’s such a struggle to be a business on Northgate the first six months anyway,” Dudley said. Ghafour al-Kahtani, manager of Aggies International, which is an international grocery store that opened about three months ago, said the store’s hours of op eration have been reduced from 12 hours a day to six. Business was satisfactory before construction began, al- Kahtani said, but now it is so slow they will probably shut down for the summer and maybe permanently. “It hasn’t just affected us — it has killed us,” al-Kahtani said. Traylor said despite the has sle of visiting College Main busi nesses during construction, at tention should be focused on the unique, quality services avail able on Northgate. Traylor said Marooned, locat ed on Northgate for about five years, has lost the business of freshmen visiting campus for New Student Conferences this summer. The new students and their families who walk across University Drive to shop are usually a major source of sum mer business. “They don’t come [this sum mer] because it’s dirty and there are tractors trying to run them over,” Traylor said. “We’re lucky though because we have a steady clientele who know we’re here.” Dudley said Holick’s, a maker of seniors boots for the Corps of Cadets, has both a specialized market and a long history on Northgate to give it strength against the negative effects of construction. Holick’s has been on College Main since 1914. “The type of thing we do is so specialized,” Dudley said. “There isn’t any other place in town that does it. Construction does not affect business at all.” Bernie Gessner, owner of Ag gie Cleaners, said his business is losing the patronage of new students living on Northside this summer. He said these stu dents usually come to his busi ness right away because of its close location. “We live in a convenient soci ety, and as soon as things be come inconvenient, you look for someplace else,” Gessner said. But Gessner said the Aggie Cleaners, operating on North- gate since 1935, has years of faithful service on its side. And because of that, the busk: will stay open this summer. “Long-time customers tenc fight their way through,”G: ner said. Gessner said he approve the renovations College Sta is making. “The water lines were rotte he said. “They were in really:: shape. And as long as you've: up the whole street, you njp as well make it look right.” Robert Forrest, owner | Sarge’s, an Army and Navys® ply store, agreed the city is hi dling the renovation project v “Construction had to |; done,” Forrest said. “TheycoiiH n’t have done it at a better The City of College Station* working with us to make it* painless as possible.” McDaniel said the North, Revitalization Project has r fun to participate in because® the friendly spirit between, officials and Northgate busieft owners and managers. “One of the nice things for: about this project has been the: of cooperation,” McDaniel said ; He emphasized College?: tion officials value the uniqii ness of Northgate. “We want to see those h ; nesses thrive,” he said. Car Continued from Page 1 Kohler gave DAX the basic pa rameters to design the controller. “I requested that the con troller give 600 amps of power,” Kohler said. “We ended up get ting one that gave 1,000 amps.” Kohler said the closest com petitor model puts out 500 amps of power and that the more amps a controller gives, the faster a ve hicle accelerates. “The production model may not give as many amps because it is really more advanced than the rest of the sys tem,” he said. Researchers will test the time it takes the car to go from 0 to 60 mph. Tests will be done to see how the car performs on a quarter-mile drive and at a top-speed drive. Kohler said they will compare the MOSFET controller to a competi tor’s model, which will be installed to the same car to allow testing condi tions to remain the same. The starting price of the controller is $1,500. A $3,500 MOSFET controller will be avail able that will give more than 2,000 amps of power. The con trollers will be available on the market beginning October 1995. Doanh Tran, a mechanical engineering graduate student who works in the Center for Electrochemical Systems and Hydrogen Research, said the ability to draw more amps is the most fascinating aspect about the DAX’s controllers. “2,400 amps is a lot of juice,” Tran said. “You would get a great amount of acceleration | Masterson said the 2,400. controller can be put on big' engines that would require:' current to accelerate. The buyer market fort* trollers includes hobbyists, pie interested in electric car companies interested in conij ing*to electric cars. The car has been showc at the Houston Auto Show in Austin. DAX has entei into the electric vehicle sho« the State Fair of Texas in las this October. Sk@it(£h /feeding time FOR the-^n/mals I DOWN at THET LOCAL. PIZ.Z.A BOFFeV.
