Page 6 •The Battalion Sports Thursday • June 8, 1995 Rangers, McLemore end slump against KC ARLINGTON (AP) — Mark McLemore broke out of a 5-for- 42 slump with a two-run homer and keyed a six-run sixth with an RBI single as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 10-4 Wednesday night. Royals starter Tom Gordon (4-2) had a five-game win ning streak over the Rangers and an overall four-game winning streak. But the Rangers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win for the sixth time in eight games and move one-half game behind first-place California in the AL West. Kansas City committed three errors and has five in the last two games after going 12 games without one. The Rangers sent 10 men to the plate against Gordon and relievers Rusty Meacham and Dennis Rasmussen in the sixth. Third baseman Gary Gaetti’s error led to three unearned runs. Gordon walked Greer leading off the inning and he went to second on Will Clark’s single. Greer advanced to third on a fly ball and scored when Ivan Ro driguez’s liner kicked off the heel of Gaetti’s glove for an er ror and a 4-4 tie. McLemore followed with his RBI single to give Texas a 5-4 lead. Meacham yielded a run scoring single to Mike Pagliaru- lo and Esteban Beltre delivered an RBI double to make it 7-4. Otis Nixon’s bunt single drove in one run and another scored when second baseman Keith Lockhart failed to pick up the bunt. Terry Burrows (2-1) pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the victory. The Rangers trailed 4-0 when they scored three in the fourth to move within one run. Greer led off with a single, went to third on Clark’s single and scored on Mickey Tettle- ton’s sacrifice fly. One out later, McLemore hit a two-run homer, his second of the year. Rangers starter Roger Pavlik’s first-inning woes con tinned, allowing four straight singles to spot the Royals a 2(1 lead. Pavlik, who entered the game with a 16.87 ERA in the first inning over the last two seasons, had won his previous three decisions. Kansas City made it 3-0 in the second on a run-scoring grounder by Vince Coleman, The fourth run scored in the fourth on a wild pitch by Pavlik. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Promoter Bob Arum says he plans to go to court over the IBF’s decision to order a mandatory rematch be tween heavyweight champion George Foreman and Germany’s Axel Schulz. Arum said he will file suit this week to try and overturn the IBF’s decision to mandate the re match of the controversial April 22 heavyweight title fight won fights IBF narrowly by Foreman. Arum said Foreman plans to fight once more on Nov. 4 and will not fight Schulz by Oct. 3 as or dered by the IBF. “We’ll sue for $20 million and try to put them out of business,” Arum said. “At this particular point, the IBF has demonstrated it’s rotten to the core. We’d like to teach them a lesson in court.” Arum said both he and Fore man were promised during the IBF’s convention in Atlanta last week that it would not or der a rematch. But the IBF’s executive com mittee voted to rank Schulz No. decision 2 among its heavyweights and order a rematch by Oct. 3. The IBF also said an agreement much be reached on purses by July 3 or the fight would go out for purse bid. “You can’t mandate purse bids and impose an arbitrary time lim it which prevents the champion from being able to maximize the economic benefits of his champi onship,” Arum said. Arum said Foreman could fight Schulz on the November date, but that the most profitable bout for the IBF champion would be against Evander Holyfield, who beat him in a 1991 title fight. HALL: ‘Basebrawl ruins game Continued from Page 2 child wearing his favorite player’s jersey is a common scene, there is no place for this kind of violent action. The baseball players, obvi ously unaware of the campaign, violently beaned one another over a really “important” matter. The players probably don’t even know why they angrily charged the mound causing their fellow players possible career-ending injuries. Like real-life domestic vio lence, this scene has no expla nation. Every night on the news, people search for answers from an angry world. Every morning on the news, they still search. Then, people read the sports page, often times to es cape the front-page horrors where domestic violence is of ten left unreported because it has become commonplace. Of course, competitors will get overly heated about an unfair call, a comment made by their opponent, or even, as Vernon Maxwell can testify, a hostile fan. Settling the matter on the field has gone beyond mere vic tory. Players are out for blood. The good will that the foundation of sports was built goes back to the games in Greece. Pride was on the line then, but athletes settled matters on the field of play. Yes, words do hurt, whether in the classroom or in the ath letic arena. Just ask any player involved in the fight from the Bulls or the War Hawks. The violent answer they chose to settle a dispute can be seen in everyday life. Stop ping domestic violence may never come to pass, but when our sports heroes violently fight over mere words, cur tailing the problem may be further away than we think.
