Attorney indicted in client’s slaying HOUSTON (AP) — New evi- dence in the 1991 murder of a Fort Bend County nightclub owner points to the original sus pect, the dead man’s lawyer, prosecutors say. Wendell Lee Statchuk, 33, was shot to death on March 13, 1991. But not until a fourth review by a Fort Bend County grand jury was a murder indictment returned against Statchuk’s at torney, Keyser. James Stephen Keyser, 42, was to turn himself in to Fort Bend County authorities Wednesday after the Monday in dictment. His attorney, David Gerger, said Keyser would post a $15,000 bond. “We’re still trying to get the paperwork done,” Gerger said. However, Booking officers at the Richmond jail said Keyser had yet to appear late Wednesday. Assistant District Attorney Sid Crowley said new evidence, including possible blood-stain samples found in Keyser’s garage, led to the latest review. “I thought there was suffi cient circumstantial evidence to prove he did it,” Crowley said. The first time Keyser was ac cused of killing Statchuk, a mur der indictment was dismissed after prosecutors decided they lacked sufficient evidence. Two additional grand jury re views resulted in no action and a no-bill before Monday’s new indictment. Another attorney for Keyser, Mike DeGeurin, said his client denies any involvement in the killing but would not be avail able for comment. “I suppose that this is the only way to finally put this mat ter to rest,” DeGeurin said. The victim’s brother, Joseph Statchuk, had sought the new indictment for three years. Statchuk, 40, unemployed because of health problems, contends Keyser’s motive to kill his brother involved the unrav eling of an insurance scam they were running. The two allegedly had concoct ed a scheme, in which Wendell Statchuk would wreck cars and file insurance claims for injuries.
