Ballpark at Arlington Continued from Page 7 The loss put the Longhorns at 41-14 overall for the year and 14-10 in conference play. It was the worst defeat ever for Texas at Disch-Falk Field and was also the biggest margin of victory for the Aggies in the series history. “Someone told me that this was the most that we’ve ever beaten them by, “ Johnson said. Roger Hsieh/Tup Battai.ion Freshman pitcher Shane King sits and contemplates what went wrong during A&M’s 10-5 loss to UT on Friday. “Those things aren’t that impor tant to us, as long as we win.” Amazingly enough, the big numbers put on the board by the Aggies’ offense did not even ap proach the club records. In 1936, A&M lit up Southern Methodist for 32 mans in a single game, and in 1985, the Aggies collected an all-time best 30 hits against Texas Tech. Perhaps the biggest statistic to come from the win was the fact that it allowed the Aggies to remain in first place, despite los ing two of the three games. A&M remains tied with Rice University for the top spot in the SWC, since the Owls lost two of three this weekend to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders also re main in the hunt with a 12-9 mark and Texas is in a virtual tie with them for second place. Next up for the Aggies is a cru cial, three-game, season-ending series next weekend in Fort Worth. The May 13 game will be played at The Ballpark in Arling ton, home of the Texas Rangers. The Aggies feel that winning this series is important so that they will gain momentum going into the conference tournament. “This was a big victory for us, but Texas still won two games in this series, including the first one at Olsen, “ Johnson said. “We still have a lot to prove and a ways to go before we are play ing the way that we are capable of playing.” Indians take 12 to beat Rangers □ Missed opportunities cost Texas the game, but split the four game series with Cleveland. ARLINGTON (AP) — Anoth er hit here for Texas or a better fielded ball there for the Rangers, and the Cleveland In dians may have started the sea son in a hole at 1-3. Instead, Cleveland got the breaks. Not all the bounces went the Indians’ way, but there were enough good ones to salvage a split of a four-game season-open ing series with a 7-6 victory in 12 innings Sunday. “I’m glad to get out of here with a split,” Cleveland manag er Mike Hargrove said. “Any time you go on the road, that’s what you have to shoot for. ... Starting the season 1-3 would’ve been very difficult.” The Indians may not have had a choice if Texas’ Matt Whiteside (1-1) had stopped a comebacker in the 12th and ei ther held Albert Belle at third or maybe even turned a double piay. Instead, it bounced off his glove, Belle scored the go-ahead run and soon after Eddie Mur ray scored what turned out to be the winning run. Then again, the game may never have gone to extra innings had the Rangers turned an even easier double play opportunity in the third. Spurs: Rodman’s attitude key Continued from Page 7 cost the Spurs dearly. If the Spurs are going to get anywhere, Rodman has to clean up his act. Considering this is the playoffs, it seems like that would be simple. But as history has taught us, Rodman is anything but simple. When he is on, there is no better rebounder in basketball. When he is off, there is no one worse at dissolving team chemistry. The Western Conference has three other quality con tenders in Utah, Phoenix and Seattle. Despite loudmouth Charles Barkley’s insistence that the Spurs can’t hang with the Suns in a playoff series, San Antonio has proven to be the team to beat. With the homecourt advan tage throughout the playoffs and the best road record in the regular season, the Spurs can play anywhere without fear. But it all comes back to Mr. Robinson. He has spent his ca reer anchoring average teams with questionable desire. He fi nally has the support on the boards with Rodman and on the offensive end with Elliott. in playoff run The pieces are finally in place and the Spurs are on well on their wayto the championship. Barring any major catastro phes, there is no reason why the Spurs can’t win it all. Another first-round playoff loss would set the Spurs back beyond recognition. The veter ans are getting older, and Robinson can’t continue his fu rious pace of scoring and re bounding forever. It’s now or never, and soon the NBA will see if San Antonio is more than just the spur of the moment. End of School Special Mr. Gatti’s FastFeast Buffet Specially Priced Just For You!
