The Boys Choir of Harlem
Bringing gospel and jazz styles to Rudder toni
rsday • A
OP
By Amber Clark
The Battalion
F or inner-city New York
school children, community
organizations offer an ini
tial step toward making a change
for a better life. For 25 years.
The Boys Choir of Harlem has
been serving to keep kids be
tween the ages of eight and 18
off the streets and in a produc
tive direction.
Tonight at 8:00 in Rudder Au
ditorium the MSC Opera and Per
forming Arts Society will present
the small church choir that has
grown into a world-renowned per
forming arts institution.
Under the direction of founder
Dr. Walter J. Turnball, the 450
singers have a repertoire that
ranges from classical to gospel to
jazz. Singers are arranged in
three groups, including the con
cert choir and the recently-reor
ganized girls choir. The perform
ing choir, consisting of 35 to 40
boys, is the select group of mem
bers chosen to perform on tour.
Turnball has received recogni
tion for his talents aside from
the creation of the Boys Choir of
Harlem. He was recently named
“One of the 15 Greatest Men on
Earth” by McCall’s Magazine,
and has been granted several
honorary degrees for his work.
Dianne Mueck, advertising
representative for OPAS, said
people are interested in the choir
for its profound effect on the
lives of inner-city children.
In 1987, the Boys Choir of
Harlem Academy was established
to provide fourth- through eighth-
grade students with the high
standards of academic achieve
ment, proper conduct and punctu
ality. Within the next few years,
the program expanded to include
a high school and the addition of
girls to the student body.
Classes at the academy stress
academic curriculum at a college prepara
tory level. The course work is supplement
ed with social services, counseling and
recreation. Students who tour with the
performing choir receive credit for each
performance. Mueck said programs like the
academy can only benefit the community.
“People that might not have had a
chance at life now do,” Mueck said. “And
their music appeals across the board to
just about everyone.”
The Boys Choir of Harlem has per
formed at several special events, including
the rededication of the Statue of Liberty,

The Boy’s Choir of Harlem
the Columbus Quincentennial Ceremonies
and Nelson Mandela’s arrival in the Unit
ed States. Their works are also found on
the soundtracks of Jungle Fever, Malcolm
X and Glory.
The choir makes 80 to 100 appearances
annually, as well as television perfor
mances. The choir also tours international
ly, and has been on eight European and
three Asian tours.
But despite the heavy schedule, the
Boys Choir of Harlem remains dedicated to
providing musical and academic training.
Andi Stevenson, chair of OPAS, said the
choir performed at A&M several years ago.
