Drabek looks
□ The Astros' pitcher
hopes to continue his
'94 All-Star success.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) —
Doug Drabek no longer worries
about his spring training perfor
mances — good or bad.
He had a bad spring last
year but for the regular season
he had a 12-6 record and
2.84 ERA, third best in the Na
tional League.
Drabek didn’t get down about
last spring and he’s not putting
much stock in this spring either,
even with a shutout string of
seven innings.
“I used to think how you did
here meant something,” Drabek
said. “But now, 1 know it does
n’t. But you want to do well in
spring training just to get the
positive attitude going before
the season starts.”
Drabek, the Astros’ opening
day pitcher against the San
Diego Padres, is trying to
prepare this season, as he
did following an abbreviated
1990 spring.
“In ’90, I wasn’t worrying too
much about control,” he said. “I
just wanted to get my arm into
shape. I wanted to go five, six
SPORTS
for ‘90 repeat
innings and not be laboring be
fore leaving camp.”
At 32, the nine-year major
league veteran, is taking care to
be in top condition and boosting
his confidence for the start of
the season.
“If you’re working on things
and they’re going well, you feel
good about it. If things aren’t
going well, you have a tenden
cy to say ‘I’m behind’ and you
start concerning yourself with
that instead of just going out
and pitching.”
Drabek won seven games in a
row last season, matching the
longest streak of his career. He
started the streak after losing
his first start of the season on
April 5.
Drabek was named to the NL
All-Star team for the first time
in his career last season.
Because of the shortened
spring training, some pitchers
could experience dead
arms that normally occur dur
ing the regular six weeks
spring training.
“Tbat could happen,’’Drabek
said. “You can have it in spring
training, and you can have it
during the season too. You re
ally don’t have any control over
when it’s going to happen.”
Hickey: All in the family

tition,” Hickey said. “When we
would both have a tough day, we
would compete to see who had
the worse day. We are just very
happy. We support each other.
“(Of course,) he’s the only
one at home with a Southwest
Conference ring.”
The Hickeys said the combi
nation of people and the excel
lent athletic facilities that
the campus offers have con
tributed to the success of
A&M’s athletic programs.
“The stability in the athletic
department and our first-class
facilities in baseball have con
tributed to the success,” Bill
Hickey said. “When recruits
come to visit, they marvel at
the facilities.”
“From the women’s side, it’s
the caliber of people who work
here, “ Lynn Hickey said. “We
have had excellent support from
John David Crow and Wally
Groff. Both have made the effort
to make all the sports successful.”
The Hickeys have the same
goals for A&M’s sports.
“I’m going through a new ex
perience trying to understand
my role,” Hickey said. “I have
different goals now. I want our
teams to be in the top 10.”
Coach Hickey agrees with his
wife’s goals for the baseball team.
“We are on a roll and you have
to keep that going,” Hickey said.
“My goal is to help our baseball
program stay in the top 10.”

Williams
‘startled’ by
accusations
DALLAS (AP) — A teen
age topless dancer, who has
accused Cowboys tackle
Erik Williams and his friend
of sexual assault, had sex
with both men, then became
upset when Williams said
she couldn’t be his girl
friend, the player’s lawyer
said Tuesday.
Attorney Donald Godwin
of Dallas said at a news con
ference that Williams was
startled when he discovered
two policemen at his front
door early Thursday.
Godwin said Williams,
26, told him that the 17-
year-old had sex willingly
with him and Roderick Car-
son, 26, of Madison, Wis.,
that night, and on the previ
ous weekend.
Both men were arrested
Thursday and released after
posting $2,500 bond at sepa
rate hearings.
Dallas police filed felony
sexual assault charges
against Williams and Carson
in Collin County on Monday,
said Deputy Chief Pam Walt.
Sexual assault is a second-
degree felony punishable by
two to 20 years in prison.
Collin County District Attor
ney Tom O’Connell said his
office would review the
charges before forwarding
them to a grand jury.
The attorney said he was
presenting Williams’ version
of events the night of April
12 because the woman's ver
sion, published by local
news media, was inaccurate.
Neither Williams nor
Carson was at the news
conference.
Her attorney has said
that Williams and Carson,
each weighing more than
300 pounds, raped the 110-
pound woman and forced
her to have sex after a night
of heavy drinking and that
Williams then threatened to
have her “blown away” if
she went to police.
