By Kristina Buffin The Battalion No matter where it plays, rain seems to interrupt the 25th-ranked Texas A&M soft- ball team. The Lady Aggies are looking forward to dry skies at the Frost Cutlery Collegiate Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee this weekend. “This tournament will serve as a great way to get on a roll,” coach Bob Brock said. “We haven’t had any type of consis tency with all the rain outs we’ve had. Our biggest goal is to play at the same level that we have been.” The Lady Aggies finished first in 1993 and finished sec ond last year in Chatanooga and expect to face tough teams this weekend. “This is the toughest tourna ment from here on out,” short stop Kendall Richards said. “Last weekend (at theTulsa Tournament) brought up our confidence and if we hit like we did (last weekend) we shouldn’t have a problem. If we do well this weekend it will definately boost our confidence and hope fully carry over to the rest of the season.” A&M will be competing agaipst Tennessee Tech Univer sity, Centenary and the Univer sity of Virginia on Friday. The Lady Aggies will then face the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Winthrop Col lege on Saturday. The champi onship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday. “The level of competition will be real good,” Brock said. “There will be top teams from the East Coast and the South. It has been a good test in the last two years, Hopefully it will let us pick up some momentum.” The Lady Aggies have been on an offensive rampage in the last five games. Five players have batting averages over .300 including Richards’ team high average, .406. “Our hitting has been tremendous,” pitcher Erin Field said. “The middle of the lineup is coming around real well. This tournament should determine the outcome of the season.” Field, whose is hitting .330, and Richards have regis tered at least one hit in the last eight games. Pitching will also be impor tant to A&M’s success in Chat tanooga. During the team’s five- game win streak, the pitching staff has given up only 4.3 runs per game. “Our pitchers have been working hard every day,” Brock said. “Their doing a great job and working hard to do better.” Field attributes her improve ment and success to the help of assistant coach Shawn Andaya. “Shawn has done a great job with me,” Field said. “She has given me more confidence. All of the pitchers complement each other well because of our different speeds and that helps us against our opponents.” A&M posts a 5-0 record against the teams that it will face in its bracket. A&M hopes that success in Tennessee will fuel its momentum. “We feel confident right now,” Field said. “This weekend should give us some momentum and will be a big boost in our confidence level.” Rangers sign Tettleton □ The two-time All- Star catcher gets a one- year, $550,000 deal. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers decided to ditch their plan to share the designated hitter spot on Wednesday when they signed Mickey Tettleton to a one-year contract for $550,000. Tettleton, who made $1.5 million last year when he made the All-Star team for the second time, probably will replace Jose Canseco in the lineup and will be used to protect cleanup hitter Juan Gonzalez. Tettleton, 34, who can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses, was ex pected to work out for the first time Thursday. “I could think about (the pay cut) all I want, but the bottom line is I chose not to,” Tettleton told The Dallas Morning News from his home in Oklahoma City. “Believe me. I’m thrilled to come to Texas. It was my first choice of where I wanted to play.” Several teams were interested in Tettleton, but the Rangers’ ad vantage was a previous relation ship between him and new Texas general manager Doug Melvin. Melvin was farm director for the Baltimore Orioles and he signed Tettleton after the Oak land A’s released him. After 19 games in the minors, Tettleton was called up to the Orioles and his career blossomed. “Doug was the guy who gave me a second chance,” Tettleton said. “You tend not to forget those things.” Tettleton is a switch-hitter with good power — hitting at least 30 homers in each of three previous seasons with the De troit Tigers. He hit .248 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs in 107 games last year. Although DH will be his pri mary job, Tettleton also may spell Will Clark at first and will be a third catcher behind Ivan Rodriguez and Dave Valle. He also can help out in right field. i i i i ] 1 i i i t f 1 c NEED A JOB? Now hiring for the 1996 Aggieland.
