Barber moved from second base to the mound to close out the final frame. Bailey said the team’s in creasing confidence has keyed the winning streak. “As the pitchers’ confidence went up, the hitters’ confidence did too,” Bailey said. “We know we don’t have to score that many runs. Earlier in the year, the pitchers were kind of struggling, so the hitters pressed a little bit. "You can't point to one guy that we're circling our wagons around." Curl: Putting up good stats as amateur draft approaches Continued from Page 7 nior year, he was on the sev enth-ranked team in the nation. A&M was the first recruiting trip that Curl took, and he said he liked all the elements associ ated with the school. I just fell in love with the weather and the atmosphere here,” Curl said. “Everything was just right.” However, Curl said he did get homesick since he was so far away from his hometown. “The first semester of my freshman year was the tough est,” Curl said. “After the first semester, with baseball, I just forgot about it and got used to being so far away.” Curl batted .313 during his freshman year while starting 17 of the 24 games he appeared in. Curl was a member of A&M’s College World Series team that year, hitting .297 with seven home runs and 30 runs batted in. He also had the first RBI of the College World Series in the Aggies’ 5-1 victory over Kansas. The College World Series, however, was not Curl’s biggest athletic moment since he has worn the maroon and white. “My greatest thrill is when we won the NCAA Regionals here in College Station on Olsen Field,” Curl said. “If we would have played in the College World Series like we played in the Regionals, we would have won the whole thing.” Schedule: Looks like team scraping the bottom of barrel Continued from Page 7 move up once the season cranks up. A&M’s non-conference lineup consisting of LSU, North Texas, Colorado and Middle Tennessee State is a mixed bag. LSU is a big-time football program, but by name only. The Tigers’ prowess is only a shred of what it used to be and voters are sure to recognize this when the Aggies beat them in the season opener. When A&M signed on to play Colorado, it appeared to be a stroke of brilliance. But with the departure of Rashaan Salaam, Michael Westbrook and Kordell Stew art, the matchup has lost a lot of its luster. However, the Aggies still might gain a little recognition with a road victo ry in Boulder. The Aggies’ other two non- SWC opponents are simply fill ing space on the schedule. Play ing and defeating North Texas and Middle Tennessee State won’t gain the respect of na tional pollsters. The fact that Division I-AA MTSU is even on the schedule is embarrassing. This fall, A&M will be field ing one of its most solid outfits ever and hopes of a national championship are high. But as other recent Aggie teams have come to realize it’s tough to move up in the rankings when you don’t play the prestigious programs that voters admire. It would be a tragedy if A&M were to go undefeated and miss out on the national championship because of the merit of its schedule. In the future, the program needs to schedule tougher non conference games. Playing against more formidable compe tition better prepares the team for a powerful bowl opponents and gives fans and pollsters something to be excited about. Since national voters don’t think very highly of the SWC, valuable ground could be made up with wins over perennial powers. To be the best, you have to play and beat the best. Let’s just hope the 1995 Ag gies don’t learn that lesson the hard way. jove rom “Now, I think everyone is re laxed and if we can keep this up, we’ll win a lot of games.” Mitchell credited improved team hitting and better pitching control for the A&M surge. “Our hitting got going about the same time we cut our walks down as a staff and that was a big key,” Mitchell said. “Were hitting the ball consistently now — Mark Johnson head baseball coach and that’s how we got on a roll.” Johnson said the Aggies’ hot play of late has resulted from a total team effort. “We’re playing fairly well right now,” Johnson said. “You can’t point to one guy that we’re circling our wagons around. We’ve got some people at the bottom of the order that are do ing an outstanding job.” The baseball team returns to action Friday at Baylor and then caps the series with a double- header against the Bears Satur day at Olsen Field. Last year however, was a down year for Curl’s power num bers. He had only two home runs and a slugging percentage of .462. However, he had 32 RBIs with four triples and a team-high 10 doubles. Regardless of Curl’s play, there are two fans who will al ways support him as he helps the Aggies to victory. Those two are Curl’s wife, Gina, and their nine-month old daughter, Hunter McKenzie. Curl said they are an inspiration to him. “They make it so much easier to come home after a tough game,” Curl said. “My wife is very supportive of everything. Last year, I didn’t have a good season, and she said to just stay with it, work hard, and things will work out. “So far, they are and hopeful ly they will continue.” With the numbers Curl has put up this season, he has posi tioned himself for a spot in the amateur baseball draft. Besides hoping to follow the Aggies who have been drafted, Curl also wants to be remembered like they were when they left A&M. “I just want to be remem bered as a hard worker and a team player,” Curl said. “I think that is characteristic of all play ers that come through A&M and I just want to follow their foot steps.” Wed n 111 H jBil requ to Se □ Cl atic on E Act.
