The Montgomery Cl Bill 2. Student loan repayment 3. Part-time income The Army Reserve Alternate Training Program is a smart way to pay for college. First, if you qualify, the Montgomery GI Bill can provide you with up to $6,840 for current college expenses or approved vo/tech training. Second, if you have-or obtain-a qualified student loan not in default, you may get it paid off at the rate of 15% per year or $500 , whichever is greater, up to a maximum of $10,000. Selected military skills can double that maximum. Third, you can earn part-time money in college, and here's how it works: One summer you take Basic Training, and the next summer you receive skill training at an Army school. You'll earn over $1,500 for Basic and even more for skill training. Then you'll attend monthly meetings at an Army Reserve unit near your college, usually one weekend a month plus two weeks a year. You'll be paid over $105 a weekend to start. It's worth thinking about. It was an exciting moment for the entire team.” What has allowed Harris the success that he has at tained is his mental ability and work ethic. “He is the kind of player that you want nine of,” Johnson said. “He is strong mentally and does not back down from challenges. He is a hard worker and has great focus and concentration.” At the end of last season, Harris’ teammates voted him as the Marion Pugh Most Valuable Player and won the Marion Pugh Spirit Award for the sec ond straight season. Because this is his senior season, Harris believes the best way to close out his collegiate career is with a trip to Omaha. “I want to win the SWC and get another ring,” Harris said. “We have a good chance to go to the (World) Series. That would be the only way to end a college career.” Harris was drafted in 1994 by the Oakland Athletics and played on the USA National Team. Harris’s goal is to play professional and Johnson be lieves he has a pretty good shot. “He has a chance,” Johnson said. “I know that if he gets a shot, he will play hard every game and not all major league players are like that. He won’t be one of those flashy players that you see, he is more like Pete Rose.” Aggie5 take sixth straigli By Kristina Baffin The Battalion Momentum. J Jackson: A true role model Continued from Page 7 not be able to continue his foot ball career, Jackson wanted to continue to play baseball. After a year and a half of re habilitation, Jackson was ready to play ball again. The Royals had released him but the White Sox were willing to let him compete for a job. Jack- son played in the outfield and was the designated hitter for the White Sox and played last year’s strike-shortened season with the California Angels. Jackson played very well for someone who had just had hip replacement surgery. His ac complishments include a trip to the American League Cham pionship game with the White Sox in 1993. The fact that Jackson was able to overcome his injury il lustrates not only his physical strength but his ability to over come adversity. At a time when athletes are being ex posed for drug use and arrest ed for a variety of felonies, it is refreshing to see an athlete be spotlighted for his talent antj not his rap sheet. Jackson’s primary reasor! for retiring is to spend time with his family. Unlikfl Michael Jordan, who went on to play another sport instead#! spending more time with his family, Jackson seems genuine in his intentions. Although Jackson did not win a NFL Championship or the World Series he was an All-Star and a Pro-Bowler. AI though he might not have achieved the status of players such as Joe Carter of the Toronto Blue Jays or Marcus Allen of the Kansas City Chiefs, his impression and con tribution to the sports world will always remain. Jackson believes that his time in sports is up and is looking to pick up another en deavor. Along with spending time with his family, Jackson is planning on pursuing an act ing career. If he spends as much time and dedication on his acting career that he did on sports, he will have nothing but continued success. r Come join the...
