Sanchez Student Body President Candidates • Carl Baggett My name is Carl Baggett and I'm #1 on your ballot running for student body pres ident. I would like to talk to you a lit tle bit about something that is very important to me — Texas A&M University. Here at A&M, the student body president should focus on maintaining and developing the strengths and heritage of A&M and set a tone for A&M. If elected, we will together set that tone. We will do this through our plat form goals for A&M. These are holistic attempts to better A&M — goals that reach and touch every Aggie. More im portantly, these goals will all be imple mented in one year's time. High goals with concrete results is what A&M needs, and that is what we are going to give them. Here are three platform goals for next year: No one wants the very reasons that we came to this University to go away such as Muster, Bonfire and Fish Camp. With the help of the Development Foun dation, this will never happen. We will initiate an endowment fund for these or ganizations. This will set up a permanent fund that will produce annual income for the support of these traditions. With this intact, these great traditions will be here for us and our children. The student body president should be the voice of A&M. By creating a student body Executive Council, this voice will be broadly supportive of student needs. The council will consist of student lead ers across campus such as IFC, MSC, RHA, Panhellenic and senior class presi dent, as well as the Corps Commander, plus three students appointed campus wide who just need to be heard. Through this organization, a more representative voice of A&M will be heard. The student body president should be accessible to all students anytime, any where. To help foster this, I will set up a booth two hours a week in the MSC to sit there for students to come and talk to me. This will make it possible for any student that has a concern about A&M to be able to voice it to the Student Body President. • Toby Boenig Howdy Ags! I once heard the quote, "I don't care how much you know, until I know how much you care." Some people have said that it doesn't mat ter how much ex perience a student body president has. I disagree with that because I believe that experience not only shows how much a person knows, but more importantly than that, experience shows how much a person cares. My name is Toby Boenig, and I want to be the next student body president of Texas A&M. I hope that after you look at my record of service in the student govern ment, as well as other organizations, you will see how much Toby Boenig does care about Texas A&M. I have served in the Stu dent Senate for four years. When I was chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, we started the fight for extra reading days as well as the publication of professor eval uations — which are both being implement ed. Those are just a few issues that I have been able to work on. I do agree that expe rience is not the sole reason to vote for a student body candidate. My vision is to prepare A&M for the Class of '00. I want to do this by focusing on three areas: Student life: • Improving campus security by increasing the number of emergency phones, increas ing the number of self defense classes in the kinesiology department and increasing Uni versity police presence during night hours. • Utilize off-campus bus routes for home football games for added convenience • Set up monthly roundtables for students to open channels of communication re garding cultural differences. Academics: • Ensure library accountability to students through the creation of a student advisory committee to oversee the allocation of stu dent funds for library improvements. Legislative: • Actively oppose the recommended elimi nation of federal student financial aid through initiating a combined effort with student leaders at other universities across the nation. I hope that by looking at some of my ideas and experience you see that Toby Boenig does care about this University. My vision is to prepare A&M to overcome the challenges of the next century. I want my vision to be our vision, so please Vote for Toby Boenig.
