High lights from this season include advancement to the semifinals of the regional tournament in the fall and victory in the Texas A&M Spring Fling Invitational earlier this spring. Confidence in one another has played a ma jor role in each of these victories. “Confidence is the key to suc cess and that has definitely been the case with Rico and I,” Horan said. “With each match we’ve played I feel that we’ve just got ten better and better to the point that we go out expecting to win each time.” There are also times when the two are at odds with each other. In a recent match againet Texas, tempers flared up slight ly in the 9-8 loss that went to a disheartening tie-breaker. “Sometimes we say things to each other that are taken out of context and this causes our level of play to decrease,” Rodarte said. “However, in these cases we are always able to talk things over and get things straightened out.” Second spring training changes Collins’ priorities HOUSTON (AP) — Terry Collins already has his priorities in order for the Houston Astros’ second spring training. First, there will be introduc tions for the six players the As tros obtained from the San Diego Padres last Dec. 28 in a 12-player trade that will change the makeup of the 1995 Astros. Then, Collins wants to clear up any pent-up emotions that might be lingering from the lengthy players’ strike. "We’ll have a discussion be fore we take the field because I want them to understand, if they have a problem with me or what we did, we will clear the air before we walk out on the field,” Collins said. "It will be over with and done.” Collins worked at a frantic pace on Monday, getting ready to return to the club’s spring training camp at Kissimmee, Fla. to begin workouts on Thursday. Thursday will be a voluntary reporting date for the Astros and Friday will be the manda tory reporting date. The Astros have only three weeks to get ready for the opening of the season on April 26. Getting acquainted is the first order of business. "That’s probably going to be our biggest concern, where those guys fit in,” Collins said. “We are really lucky. We not only have good players here in Hous ton we have good people." The new Astros are outfielders Derek Bell and Phil Plantier, in- fielders Craig Shipley and Jackie Gutierrez and pitchers Doug Bro- cail and Pedro Martinez. All figure prominently in Collins’ plans. Bell is a certain starter in right field or center field. Shipley likely will start the season platooning with Chris Donnels at third base. Brocail will compete for the fifth starting position and Plantier could be the starter in left field if he beats out last year’s starter, Luis Gonzalez. Collins already has addressed the replacement players, who narrowly missed their dreams of playing in the major leagues. "I thanked them for all that they went through,” Collins said. "I told them I respected them for standing up for something they believed in.” The strike may have cost two rookies a chance at starting po sitions. Collins wanted a full spring to look at Brian Hunter in center field and Phil Nevin at third base. Scholarship: Never say die attitude will get you far Continued from Page 5 to survive, I still congratulate him for his efforts. Believe me, I know all about trying out and being denied. After high school, I had some scholarship offers, both partial and full, to play baseball. For different reasons, I turned them down and decided to try my luck at walking on on the A&M baseball team. For two years, I have gone out to Olsen Field on the second week of school and tried out for a spot on the team. Even though both times, I’ve been denied a jersey number, I enjoyed my time pursuing a dream. Just stepping out onto Olsen was a treat in itself and giving it all I had in front of coach Mark Johnson was special. Most sports fans know about the Michael Jordan story when he was in 10th grade. He was cut from the varsity bas ketball team and worked on every aspect of his game in the off-season in order to show the coach how wrong he was in cutting him. All the work paid off as he made it on the varsity team that next year. The rest of the story is still unfolding. Coaches are looking for players who can help their team, but they can not offer them a scholarship. Yes, maybe there won’t be a start ing position waiting for them once they make the squad. However, the same determi nation and work ethic that helped them make the team can also help them get some playing time and maybe a starting spot. People should never give up on their dream of making a col lege team because they did not get a scholarship. If anything, this should make them that much more determined to prove that they deserve to be there and someone made a big mistake by overlooking them. Whether it is an example of pursuing an athletic dream, as Jordan shows, or if it’s an ex ample of struggling for sur vival, like Jim Valvano, both relay a simple message. Never give up.
