Yell Leaders: Group looks forward to a great yeai T*
Continued from Page 1
“I’ve always wanted to run for yell
leader,” Michael Thornberry said, “but I
never seriously considered it until I came
to A&M and joined the Corps.”
Torn said his decision to run did not have
anything- to do with family tradition or his
brother being a yell leader last year.
“Ever since I was little, when I went to
football games and saw the yell leaders.
I’ve wanted to be one,” Torn said. “Those
guys stood out, not because they are any
better than anybody else, but because they
are different.”
Torn said being a yell leader will give him
the chance to meet many different people
outside of the Corps of Cadets.
“I wanted to see the University from
everyone’s perspective and get to know some
non-regs,” he said.
“Some people run because they think it
will look good on their resumes. That was
in no way my intention,” he said. “I love
Texas A&M and there is no other place I’d
rather be.”
Hewes said he ran for yell leader in 1994-
95 to give something back to A&M and he
believes being a yell leader is one of the
biggest services he could give.
“I was an out-of-state student when I got
here and I didn’t know much about it,” he
said. “The Aggie spirit kind of engulfed me.
“I ran a second year because I thought
with the wisdom and dedication I had
earned, I had a better chance to serve the
Twelfth Man.”
Kemp ran for yell leader again this year
because of the good experiences he had as
1994-95 junior yell leader.
“First of all, I ran for yell leader because
A&M has given me so much,” Kemp said.
“It’s given me good friends and a family.
“I wanted the chance to go out and talk to
people and represent A&M.”
Kemp and the others all agreed that the
best part of being a yell leader is being able
to represent A&M, not only at games but at
Fish Camp and A&M Mother’s Clubs.
“I enjoy just talking to people and watch
ing their eyes get big when I tell them about
all of A&M’s traditions,” Kemp said.
Hewes said he also enjoys being able to
represent A&M and express to others, espe
cially people who do not go to A&M,
what his school is all about.
“It’s about being able to touch
people’s hearts and make a differ
ence,” Hewes said. “I want them
to look through my eyes and see
the spirit of A&M.”
Kemp said other school’s also re
act positively to A&M’s yell leaders.
“The cheerleaders and even the
coaches are just amazed at how
yell leaders get the crowd going,”
he said. “We’ve had several coach
es come up and say we’re doing a
great job because the Twelfth Man
is so loud.”
The group has several meet
ings with A&M Mother’s Clubs scheduled
for this summer.
Kemp said he had planned some meet
ings before the elections to have something
to pass on to the new yell leaders.
Tom said the group will follow the lead
former head yell leader Scott Torn whe
making plans for boosting school spirit.
“We’ll try to increase support for womer.

problem with support of football, but the:
is a little lack of support with basketball’
Hewes said a winning record is the be$
tool for getting people to come out and st:
port the basketball teams. Both the wot
en’s and men’s teams are doing an exce;
tional job, he said.
Hewes said the relationships betweentl
yell leaders and the athletic teams hasals:
improved and will make for a better year.
“They respect us and our job and we
