Page 10 • The Battalion Monday • April 3, Suns fizzle. Spurs’ Elliot sizzles □ San Antonio extends their winning streak to 11 with a 109-106 win. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Charles Barkley dissed the Spurs, who then went out and beat the Suns for their 11th straight victory. Undeterred, he kept running his mouth. “I sent them a message today,” Barkley said af ter scoring 45 points in Phoenix’s 109-106 loss. “What message?” wondered San Antonio’s Sean Elliott. “That he can score 45 and they still lose? I don’t think you should ever bad-mouth your oppo nent. It just pumps you up.” The Spurs were plenty pumped up Sunday, fu eled by Barkley’s earlier comments that he would leave David Robinson second-round playoff tickets. So pumped, in fact, for the nationally televised game that Robinson’s foul trouble didn’t stop them from beating the Suns for the second time this season. Robinson played only 32 minutes and scored just 23 points, but Elliott came through with 30, and Robinson made two key free throws down the stretch. “David Robinson was in for only 32 minutes, and Dennis Rodman didn’t even play, and we beat Phoenix,” Spurs coach Bob Hill said. “That makes a statement about our team.” With the win, San Antonio improved to 52-18. The Spurs have made a home atop the Westt . Conference, the spot the Suns occupied for mos: the season. “We’ve got a long way to go and they’ve goi long way to go,” Barkley said. “I hope wep] them again in the playoffs. If they go deep ini playoffs, we’ll be there for them.” But next time, Barkley hopes to get a lilt more help. Besides his 45 and Kevin Johnsons; points, the rest of the Suns’ starters contritwii only 26. After scoring the first six points of the final;! riod, San Antonio took a 103-94 lead on Ck; Person’s 3-pointer with 2:54 remaining. The Si answered with a layup by Barkley and a 3-pi by Danny Ainge to trim their deficit to fours; 2:06 to play. Pllliott hit a 19-footer, then Johnson scorekr baskets for Phoenix to cut it to 105-103 with’: seconds left. With the Suns forced to foul, Barkleys; Robinson to the foul line, telling his pal, *ltii long walk to that free throw line.” Robinson made both foul shots and told Bare “Now, superstar, it’s your turn to step up.” Barkley missed an open 16-footer, Wesley ft son fouled Elliott with 13.7 seconds left, andE liott’s two free throws sealed the win.
