governments assume any
kind of power over the me

nize that the media has an
awesome power.”
Despite this responsibili
ty, the panelists said, the
media are often the victimoi
manipulation.
During the war in the
Persian Gulf, Begleiter said
both the U.S. and Iraq gov
ernments controlled the
American news media,
“To this day we don't
know how many Iraqi case
alties were in the war,” Be
gleiter said. “All we saw
were the wonderful picture;
from the Pentagon on the
smart bombs. We never sat
the pictures of the ones the
did not hit their targets.”
Bozell said the govemmer
can overdo regulating the me
dia for security reasons.
“I don’t care about how the
enemy feels,” Bozell said. “Bat
I do care when the govern
ment, for national security
reasons, does not disclose in
formation. But can the gov
ernment take this to an ex
treme? Absolutely.”
