HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Moni
ca Seles’ lawyers charged Thursday
that the man who stabbed her during a
tennis match was a “politically
crazed fanatic’’ who had it in for
the Serbs.
The description was in a sum
mation at a retrial that could put
Guenther Parche in jail for the attack
two years ago.
Parche was given a suspended sen
tence after his first trial for the
April 1993 stabbing of Seles that has
taken the former No.l player out
of competiion.
The leniency triggered an uproar,
and the prosecution won a retrial.
Prosecutors want a 2 year, 9 month
sentence for Parche.
Parche told police after his arrest
that he stabbed Seles to open the way
for Steffi Graf to become the world ten
nis No. 1. He also said it would hurt
the “evil” Serbs. Seles is an ethnic
Hungarian born in Serbia, part of for
mer Yugoslavia. She has since become
a U.S. citizen.
“Steffi Graf was the embodiment
of the empire of good, Monika Seles
the embodiment of the empire of evil,
Gerhard Strate, one of Seles’ lawyers,
told the Hamburg court.
“This was not the deed of a loving
fan. It was the deed of a politically
crazed fanatic,” he said.
Strate wants Parche convicted of at
tempted manslaughter, which carriess
maximum jail term of 10 years.
That might not happen, because
the prosecution is only pushing for
a conviction on causing grevious
bodily injury.

“I’m all through being opti
mistic,” Collins said. “I’m sorry

ers) and told them, ‘Call me
when it’s over.’ I see no reason
to be optimistic.”

Bayno, a Massachusetts assis
tant, was hired Thursday as the
third coach in as many years of
UNLV’s troubled basketball pro
gram, once ranked among the
nation’s elite.
Bayno promised at a news
conference announcing his hir
ing that he would work to return
the UNLV program to the
prominence it once held under
former coach Jerry Tarkanian.
“The enormous opportunity
that presents itself here, to run
this program and be the head
coach of what was once obvious
ly the greatest basketball pro
gram in the country, is a
dream,” Bayno said.

Why would athletes even
need this money? Most ath
letes are on scholarship and
do not have to worry about
fees, travel costs and any
other costs associated with
scholastics and athletics. Ex
tra money would only be used
for luxury and most 19- and
20-year olds have no need for
that amount of excess money.
Additionally, the only bene
fits the players should reap
are that of recognition for
their school.
Another reason that play
ers do not need to receive
benefits is that they are al
ready receiving a free educa
tion. This education should
be the only incentive for col
legiate players to participate
in athletics.
If we were to pay college
athletes, then this system
should be extended to acade
mic teams as well. This
means that if the debate
team wins the national
championship they would re
ceive a bonus of x amount of
dollars. Otherwise it would
not be fair and the school
would be showing favoritism.
Also, it would be unfair to
other students who are not
on scholarship and are not
being paid to study.
DeVenzio tried to further
his cause by sending out
videos to 100 athletes
suggesting that they should
form a committee to fight
against the “plot” that the
NCAA had launched against
them. Fortunately, only three
players responded.
Despite the way athletes
are perceived, usually
as greedy and power hungry,
the rejection of DeVenzios
committee shows that
athletes are thinking with
their consciences and not
their wallets. Maybe there's
hope yet.
