HOUSTON (AP) — Hours after the Houston Rockets announced that Hakeem Olajuwon will miss two games because he is anemic, Vernon Maxwell joined him on the sideline with a simi lar ailment. Both players were to miss Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers in The Summit. Olajuwon, the NBA’s most valuable player last season, skipped Monday’s practice to get a check up with team doctor Jim Muntz. Tests revealed Olajuwon’s condition Tuesday. Maxwell, named Tuesday in a S4.5 million law suit filed by a Portland Trail Blazer fan, went to Muntz on Tuesday complaining of fatigue. Muntz also decided to sit Maxwell down pending results of tests on Wednesday. Olajuwon also will miss Thursday’s game at the Los Angeles Clippers. “We’ll probably hold him (Olajuwon) out on a day-to-day basis and recheck his blood count on Friday,’’ Muntz said. “That’s so he can rest.” Although Muntz prescribed rest, Olajuwon continue to work out with the team. “He should get a full recovery and do great,’! Muntz said. “After this is corrected, we’ll haveto put leg weights on him to hold him back.” Olajuwon complained of fatigue after Sunday’s game against the Lakers in Los Angeles. He saic he’d been tired after the last five games. Olajuwon has been sidelined with other medica! conditions. He had an irregular heartbeat durins the 1991-92 season but it returned to normal afe medication. Olajuwon was hospitalized with blood clot in his left leg before the 1990-91 seasor. Blood thinners dissolved the clot. The Rockets have had difficulty keeping the! full starting lineup on the court this season. Vernon Maxwell was fined S20,000 and sus pended 10 games for charging into the stands ami punching a Portland fan. Robert Horry and Car Herrera have both been on the injured list. The fan, Steve George, is seeking $1 million from Maxwell and S3.1 million fromtfe Rockets, claiming the team should have cor. trolled Maxwell. Day: Rebel grows up Continued from Page 7 In case you haven’t seen him on television recently, the Las Vegas native’s long hair is history. Citing his thinning hair line as the reason for the shearing, the tennis superstar now sports a more modest and conservative hairdo. A year ago, the tennis world would have never envi sioned anyone challenging Pete Sampras, the world’s top player. Arguably the world’s most talented and dominating player until Agassi’s recent resurgence, Sampras now has a new adversary to deal with. Agassi has defeated Sam pras in two out of three head- to-head matches this year, in cluding the Australian final. His most recent triumph over Sampras came this past week end in a hardfought match at the Lipton Championships in Key Biscayne, Florida. If Sampras ever thought winning the French Open would be an easy task, he isn’t thinking that anymore. The only Grand Slam event that has eluded him is also the only event Agassi has left to conquer. More importantly, with Agassi now playing at the top of his game, a new rivalry is brewing between the game’s top two players. Not since John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors waged war on the court in the 1970s and ‘80s has there been such an intense rivalry on the ten nis court. Agassi has not only saved his own game, but also his new rivalry with Sampras is helping to save the game of tennis as a whole. It gives tennis fans something to cheer about at a time when the sport’s popularity is hurting. Andre Agassi has finally grown up, and the exciting skills that he has shown glimpses of over the past sev en years are finally becoming a consistent part of his game. With Agassi joining Sam pras on an elite level, a new rivalry for the 1990s is heat ing up, giving tennis lovers a lot to be excited about.
