SS8M Wednesday • March 22, 1995 We Johnson: Good relationships with players key to winning Continued from Page 7 pared for any situation that might arise in a game. “He’s always prepared for everything he runs,” Rupe said. “For every situation, he has an answer or solution and he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to baseball.” Entering this season with a 450-176-1 (.719) record, Johnson is the seventh winningest active Division I head coach. A&M has also won three Southwest Con ference championships under Johnson and has made seven NCAA regional appearances, reaching the finals five times. The Aggies also reached the Col lege World Series in 1993. Johnson recalled his greatest memories so far at A&M. “John Byington hitting two home runs in the bottom of the ninth against Texas in 1989 to win both games was amazing,” Johnson said. “That ‘89 team had some unbelievable come backs and thrilling moments. That team produced thrills for a lot of people, including myself.” Johnson said solid recruiting and dependable coaching have helped keep A&M one of the pre miere baseball programs in the country. “Recruiting has been key to our success, and we have two quality coaches in Jim Lawler and Bill Hickey,” Johnson said. “Most of all, we have a good product to sell. We can point out A&M’s academics, tradition, loy alty or excitement to recruits. “We have a great facility and the program takes good care of athletes academically. A&M has a high graduation rate, and there are many more selling points.” Johnson said the game has undergone many changes since the start of his coaching career. “The switch to aluminum bats changed things offensively and the pitching was affected as well,” Johnson said. “We also have better, stronger athletes who have played more games be fore reaching the college level. “Athletes know skills better when they get to college and that’s better for teaching.” By A&M standards, the team had a disappointing 1994 sea son, but Johnson said the team is capable of bigger things this season. “The guys have been working very hard,” Johnson said. “This year they’re looking to elevate their play to what is characteris tic and standard at A&M.” Brock: Joining new conference would give team added exposure Continued from Page 7 the interview. “I had not been around Texas A&M in my whole life,” Brock said. “I was the number one can didate and after meeting the people, I decided to come.” From there, success and Brock became synonymous as he implemented his coaching style. “I try to be fair and firm,” Brock said. “I like to adjust my coaching style because each year is different from the year before. The recruiting process tells a lot.” Brock said his most memo rable moment is the 1987 Na tional Championship . “It is dear to me because I re cruited all the players on that team,” Brock said. “I haven’t got ten over it yet.” Brock said the Lady Aggie softball team dominated in the 1980s and will continue to be a standout squad through the 1990s. “We won three national championships,” Brock said. “We were the dominating team of the 80s, like Arizona of the 90s. Don’t count us out, though, we will still contend.” Victories are common place for Brock as he is the fifth win ningest active Division I coach in fast-pitch softball. But, the 14-year veteran coach is not satisfied with the record, especially with his team preparing to enter the Big 12 in 1996. Brock said his dreams are be ing realized with the team enter ing the new super conference. “Going into the Big 12 is something I’ve always dreamed of,” Brock said. “We’ve been playing as an independent for all these years. The Big 12 will give us more incentives.” For now. Brock said he has enough incentives as he eyes the goals ahead for his team this season. “I want to win now,” Brock said. “We have an opportunity to get post-season looks.” Youth and injuries will play a major factor in determining just how far this year’s Lady Aggie squad goes. “This is a young team,” Brock said. “We’ve also had the injury bug lately. We’ve looked well at times and not so well at others.” Brock said his hopes are not dashed for the season as he sets his sights on post-season play. “Our hopes are for a post season bid to the NCAA Re- gionals,” Brock said. “Every body starts even again. Any thing can happen.” 1 dal me< at rail bas the Yel ma 692 ( ent 402 sigi tioi in ' fori 1 Sti ca: gra aca p.n me p.n sis for Ch wil 261 am He hel Ko in£ th< inf 69 1 tic da sai ini inj 9 j ha tic ty li Zi fo de lei tic 84 m< in in 84 Cl at ra loi C( Bailey: SWC championship would make up for high school Continued from Page 7 “Offensively, he puts the ball in play,” Johnson said. “He does not strike out very often, he is consistent and gives us key hits.” Defensively, Johnson likes the idea of having a lefthander playing first base. “His defense is similar to (John) Curl’s(A&M’s starting first baseman last year,)” John son said. “He does a good job de fensively and is real steady. That is what we are looking for.” Although Bailey is helping the team with his hitting abili- G oi de de ui w w ty, he believes there is still room for improvement. “I’m working on driving the . ball to left field because I can pull the ball well,” Bailey said. “I ' also want to improve on my ^ fielding and quickness.” In terms of the future, Bailey is looking forward to playing the J- 1 last two years of his collegiate career at A&M and is deter- mined to win a championship. “I want success here first and my education is important to me,” Bailey said. “I want to win here bad. I want a ring be cause I missed out on one in high school.” Former Celtic Lewis rumored to have done cocaine with Bias BOSTON (AP) — The Reggie Lewis story took another twist Tuesday, with a report that the former Celtics captain once did cocaine with Len Bias — an All- American who died of an over dose days after being drafted by Boston. A roommate of Lewis was quick to deny the report, which surfaced the day before Lewis’ No. 35 was to be retired in Boston Garden. The ceremony honoring Lewis, combined with a visit by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, is certain to make for an emotional evening. The Boston Globe reported Tuesday that Derrick Lewis, an other of Lewis’ longtime friends and also a college teammate, used cocaine with him and Bias in 1985. “Len went into the bathroom, took a toot, then me, then Reg gie, then the next guy. We made sure nobody was coming,” Der rick Lewis said, recalling an in cident he said took place during Red Auerbach’s basketball camp in 1985. Bias, a former University of Maryland star, went on to be the Celtics No. 1 pick in 1986. He died of cocaine intoxication two days later. “There might have been dif ferent players on the squad that indulged in different things, but Reggie wasn’t one of them,” Wes Fuller, who roomed with Lewis for four years at Northeastern, told The Associated Press. “It just wasn’t in his makeup.” Fuller, who owns a computer company in New Jersey, admit ted he smoked marijuana during college “and, if Reggie smoked marijuana, he would have smoked it with me. I would have known. I guess this would be detrimental to me, but I care more about Reggie.”
