"Players coacli earns respect Stew Milne/THt Battalion Head coach Mark Johnson eyes the action at Olsen Field as he gets ready to instruct his players. □ Head baseball coach Mark Johnson is work ing on his tenth win ning season in a row. By Tom Day The Battalion Mark Johnson knows a lot about winning. As head coach of the Texas A&M baseball team for the past ten seasons, he has never coached a losing squad. More importantly though, Johnson knows a little something about respect of players, a major key to his winning ways on the base ball diamond. Called a players’ coach by many, Johnson earns the respect and all-out effort of his players through attention and honesty. “We keep a well-organized program and have a good rela tionship with the players,” John son said. “Honesty is a plus, so we tell our players up front what their role is and what’s involved. “We care about the whole stu dent, not just the ballplayer.” Having the respect of his players, Johnson’s coaching style brings out their best efforts. “Every player I’ve known here has never said anything negative about him,” sopho more pitcher Ryan Rupe said. “The players like him a lot, and when he tells you something to do, you do it out of respect for him because you don’t want to let him down. “He is different than other coaches that sometimes put "Honesty is a plus, so we tell our play ers up front what their role is and what in involved." — Mark Johnson, head baseball coach added pressure on you or expect more than you can give. With Coach Johnson, if you do your best and give 100 percent, he is content with that.” In his playing days, Johnson was an All-WAC outfielder and Redemption the answer for Bailey □ Even after transferring to A&M, Jeff Bailey's batting average still hovers around the .400 mark. As a sophomore, Bailey hit .396 with 17 home runs and 57 RBIs season. and was named All-Conference and an All-Amer ican. "He came in the fall with what we call a ‘bar arm,”’ Johnson said. “But he has broken that down to a shorter stroke and has had a pretty good year so far.” Bailey’s good year has included a .397 batting average, three home runs and 17 RBIs. “He is hitting close to .400 and is a good hitter,” head coach Mark Johnson said. “That is why we recruited him, because he hits the ball well.” Even though it is still early in the season, Johnson believes that Bai ley will continue on his hitting streak. “He is showing signs that he can hit .400 in a season,” Johnson said. “He has not shown signs of breaking down yet, he has the hot bat.” Bailey contributes pow er as well as an ability to play consistently.
