From 1947 to 1953, A&M captured six of seven SWC Track and Field Championships. Last Saturday, members of those Aggie track teams gathered to remember their accomplishments. “Back in those days, practically no one had a scholarship,” Bonnen said. “We were out there because we had a lot of team spirit and wanted to run track for Texas A&M. “The coaches spotted a lot of the guys in physical education classes. They would see a guy that they thought had some ability and put him on the track team.” The Aggies were coached by Col. Andy Anderson and Ray Putnam. “We had two very fine coaches and athletes with a lot of char acter,” said Anderson’s son Rusty. “My father had a great deal of enthusiasm for track. He was able to spot ability and work with athletes to make them better.” Anderson and Putnam helped put three Aggies in the Olympics from the 1947-’53 era. Art Hamden won a gold medal in 1948 running the first leg of the 1600-meter relay in London. High jumper Walter “Buddy” Davis captured the gold while Darrow Hooper took home a silver in the shot put in 1952 in Helsinki. Hooper missed winning the gold medal by two centimeters. In 1948, the Aggies’ 1600-meter relay team of Hamden, Ray Holbrook, Don Mitchell and E.G. Bilderback surprised the coun try at a meet in Los Angeles. “The meet was at the end of the year, and the top four teams and individuals in each event were invited to participate,” Bilderback said. “Nobody knew who we were so it was quite a shock when we knocked two seconds off the world record.” Julian Herring was a distance runner on the back end of the Aggies’ winning streak. “The vets took care of the younger guys,” Herring said. “I re member Bilderback yelling at me because he didn’t think my grades were as high as they should be. The vets set the tone for A&M track.” But the late 1940s and early 1950s track teams set the standard. shooting lifts Mavs to victory CLEVP1LAND (AP) — Jamal Mashburn atoned for miserable shooting with 11 points in the second overtime, including the winning layup with 2.4 seconds left, to lead the Dallas Maver icks past the Cleveland Cava Hers 102-100 Monday night.
