Rodriguez: Antics
overshadow play
Continued from Page 5
for Rodman. Lately, 25 rebounds in a
game is considered an off night for him.
He got 27 rebounds Sunday and seems to
be a lock for the rebounding title once
again. His 17.3 rebounds per game aver
age is tops in the league and the next clos
est rebounder, Denver’s Dikembe Mutum-
bo, averages 4.2 fewer rebounds.
Rodman’s off-court antics are just as
controversial as his antics on the court.
However, athletes are considered boring
these days if they don’t have a police
record to match their athletic record.
Rodman does the dirty work for the
Spurs, grabbing rebounds and diving
into the stands for the loose ball. Not
surprisingly, he owns an excavating com
pany in the Dallas suburb of Frisco.
Whether you love him, or love to
hate him, one has to admit he is an im
pact player, just like Shaq and Ha
keem. But don’t count him out just be
cause he doesn’t score points or is
pleasing to the eye. Look at what he
does for his team instead of just scoring
and rebounding.
Willis: Freestyle times improve

the 1650-yard freestyle. Willis
has the second-best time on the
team in 1000-yard freestyle and
the third best time in the 200-
yard butterfly. In the Southwest
Conference Relays, Willis was
on the A&M team that took sec
ond place in the 1500-yard
freestyle relay team.
"Basically the main thing for
me is to get faster,” Willis said.
“I want to make progress to the
national scene as far as going to
the senior nationals.”
A third-generation Aggie,
Willis said he basically knew he
was going to A&M.
“I’ve grown up here and I
kind of knew I was going to go
here,” Willis said. “There were
other schools that I had offers
from, but A&M is so unique. My
family going there played a big
role in my decision and made
me want to come here,” he said.
Willis was a Junior Olympics
Qualifier in high school and was
a three-time MVP for his team.
He also received first-team
all-state honors for three con
secutive years.
Willis has been swimming
since he was seven-years-old
and lists his most memorable
athletic moment as winning the
500- and 1600-freestyle events
at the YMCA Nationals.
“I enjoy doing relays, but I
swim distance and there’s not
really too many distance relays
out there,” Willis said. “I prefer
to do distance events.”
Even though he has placed
his name in the A&M swimming
record books, Willis said he
hopes to add his name onto oth
er swimming records.
“I would like to go to the
NCAA’s and place in the top eight
there,” Willis said. “I think it
would be nice to break the school
records in the distance events and
help build a strong team here.
That can make your career in
swimming, or in any sport, just as
fun if you have a strong team.”
Rangers take Twins, 12
□ Replacement teams still
struggling to bring in crowds.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — For three in
nings Monday, the Minnesota Twins almost
resembled a real baseball team. For the rest
of the game, they looked like the replace
ments that they are.
The Twins wasted a 5-0 lead and the one-
hit pitching of Mike Warren with three er
rors and careless baserunning in a 12-5 split
squad loss to the Texas Rangers.
Texas was even more bumbling in the
field with four errors. But the Rangers
made the most of their chances in front of
the 1,040 fans who passed through the turn
stiles at Hammond Stadium. The Twins
said 2,500 tickets were sold for the game.
Including Monday’s split squad victory
over Boston, Minnesota is 5-2 during the ex
hibition season. Texas is 2-2.
‘‘All the guys here know they are under
a microscope and they are playing their
hearts out,” said Minnesota replacement
first baseman Brian Brady, who hit a two-
run homer. ‘T want to make the most of
this opportunity.”
While his teammates stumbled, Brady
made the most of his chance.
The big day at the plate reminded t
his extremely brief stay in the majors
had two at-bats for the California Angs
1989, including a double in his firsttr
the plate.
“The home run brought back memor;
my first big league at-bat,” Brady said
this whole thing has been an emotii
roller coaster.
“You try to make the team, butyoui
if the strike is settled you’re going tobs
of a job. I know where I stand ifthes
ends. I’m gone.”
With a 2-0 count in the first inc
Brady drove a Jackie Davidson fasj
over the right-field wall to give Minne
2-0 lead.
“With a 2-0 count, you’ve got to be
gressive at the plate,” Brady said. “Td
my second chance and I want to mafe
most of it.”
Minnesota upped its lead to 5-0 ic
third with three hits, including BradS
ly’s two-run double.
Meanwhile, Warren, the last Hi
league rookie to throw a no-hitter, pitc
three scoreless innings, giving up one
and striking out two.
