Three ways to beat
the high cost of college.
1. The Montgomery Gl Bill
2. Student loan repayment
3. Part-time income
The Army Reserve Alternate Training Program is a smart way to pay for
college.
First, if you qualify, the Montgomery GI Bill can provide you with up to
$6,840 for current college expenses or approved vo/tech training.
Second, if you have - or obtain - a qualified student loan not in default,
you may get it paid off at the rate of 15% per year or $500, whichever is greater,
up to a maximum of $10,000. Selected military skills can double that maximum.
Third, you can earn part-time money in college, and here's how it works:
One summer, you take Basic Training, and the next summer you receive skill
training at an Army school. You'll earn over $1,500 for Basic and even more for
skill training. Then you'll attend monthly meetings at an Army Reserve unit
near your college, usually one weekend a month plus two weeks a year. You'll
be paid over $105 a weekend to start. It's worth thinking about. Give us a call:

consecutive victories over Texas
Christian and Southern
Methodist.
The Aggies are looking to
make it three in a row with a
victory in the season finale, but
head coach Tony Barone said
Baylor has many weapons with
which the Aggies will have to
contend with.
“(Aundre) Branch is probably
the best percentage shooter in
the league,”,Barone said. “His
three-point range is as good as
anybody’s. I think (Nelson) Hag
gerty is a quality point guard,
and he hurts us every time we
play them.
“In my opinion, their starting
lineup can match up with any-

er teams will be out for re
venge as they try to topple
last year’s champions.
“Since we are the defend
ing champions, everyone
will be trying to beat us,”
said sophomore Robbie
Krause, who is 20-8 in sin
gles play this year. “Howev
er, we don’t feel any real
pressure in trying to defend
our championship.”
The main competition
will come from tournament
No. 1 seed Texas Christian.
The Frogs are the team to
beat in Southwest Confer
ence play this year and ear
ly exposure should be bene
ficial to the Aggies.
“TCU is ranked in the top
six in the country, so they
will definitely be tough,”
said sophomore Eric Horan,
who is 18-10 in singles play
this year. “Playing them
now will make it easier
when we play them again
later on this year.”
Other schools competing
in the tournament include
Minnesota and Harvard.
The Aggies have already
lost to Minnesota earlier
this year. Still, Kent said
there is no added pressure
as they go into match play.
“We don’t have anything
to prove going into this tour
nament,” Kent said.
body in the league. There’s no
question about that.”
McGinnis said Baylor used a
solid inside game to compliment
its outside attack in their last
meeting.
“They had a good inside
game,” McGinnis said. “(Brian)
Skinner and (Doug) Brandt
played real well.
“We don’t have anybody over
6 feet, 8 inches, and both of
those guys are, so they can just
shoot over our post men. They
can’t be taken for granted.”
Barone said a victory is key to
building momentum.
“It’s a real important game
for us,” Barone said. “We would
like to get the momentum going
into the tournament and that’s
our goal.”
Magic defeat
Rockets, 107-96
HOUSTON (AP) — Shaquille
O’Neal’s dunk with 3:47 to go
Thursday night keyed Orlando’s
first victory in Houston, 107-96
over the Rockets. It was the
Magic’s fourth straight win.
The Magic, the NBA’s worst
free throw shooting team, hit
seven of eight foul shots in the
closing minutes to put the game
away.
Anfernee Hardaway had 30
points for Orlando, while O’Neal
had 19 points and 20 rebounds.
Clyde Drexler led Houston
with 25 points, while Hakeem
Olajuwon had 22.
The Rockets never scored
over the last 2:49 after O’Neal
picked up his fifth foul and Ver
non Maxwell converted one of
two free throws to trim the Mag
ic lead to 97-96.
O'Neal followed that with a
basket and drew a foul from
Olajuwon. O’Neal, shooting 55
percent from the free throw line
over the last 10 games, made
the shot for a 3-point play and a
100-96 advantage.
Maxwell, who had 18 points
in his first home appearance fol
lowing a 10-game suspension for
punching a fan in Portland,
missed three 3-point attempts in
the final minutes.
Brian Shaw, who had just
two points in 10 minutes, kept
Orlando in the game in the final
period, scoring 11 of the Magic’s
first 12 points.
Baffin: Womens league would
showcase talents of college ball
Continued from Page 5
may offer some evidence to the
contrary.
Many people argue that
women’s basketball is too slow
paced. There is no “Showtime,”
no dunks or other plays that
make the NBA exciting to
watch.
They also argue that women
do not have the same athletic
ability that men do so the
games would be totally differ
ent and would not appeal to
fans.
While this may have been
true in the past, women’s
games have picked up the
pace. Women have gotten
taller and are using weights to
increase their strength.
For example, the three post
players for the Lady Aggies,
Kelly Cerny, Martha McClel
land and Angel Spinks, who
are 6 feet, 5 inches 6 feet, 4
inches and 6 feet, 2 inches re
spectively, are dominating on
the inside. These type of play
ers are emerging from excep
tional collegiate careers and
are looking for places to dis
play their talents in the Unit
ed States.
While interest may not have
been there in the 1980s, it
could be reinvigorated with the
creation of a professional
league. The talent that would
be infused into the league
would be huge. Players like
Lisa Branch, Texas Tech’s
Tabitha Truesdale and UCLA’s
Lisa Leslie, just to name a few,
would be great additions to a
created league.
These players have a wide
range of talents that they can
contribute to an established
league and interest would be
peaked.
Attendance at women’s col
legiate games has been on the
rise, illustrating the interest
that exists. At big time pro
grams such as Tennessee and
Stanford, fans fill the complex
es to capacity. This illustrates
that if the talent is there, the
fans will pay to see it.
What the NBA should do is
create a sister league which
will be governed by Commis
sioner David Stern. There
would be a Western and East
ern Conference with five to ten
teams in each conference. The
draft would be similar to the
NBA but without the lottery.
Players from abroad could also
be eligible to play in the
league.
The league should get at
least a five year trial run to
see how it works out and give
it a fair deal. With the absence
of baseball and the interest in
basketball increasing, a wom
en’s league should be given a
try and I am almost positive
only success will follow.
