so we can get candidates not in
academia.”
Bisor said committee members
will focus on each candidate’s
ability to interact with customers
and employees.
“Students want somebody who
can work well with students,”
Bisor said. “I need to know the
person is going- to be an excellent
human resources manager with
exceptional personal relations
skills with students and staff.”
Ron Beard, interim director of
Food Services, said a director
must be able to consider the cus
tomers’ viewpoints.
“I believe the strongest quality
in a director is being able to look
at things from a customer’s stand
point,” Beard said. “Attitude is
extremely important to under
standing their needs, issues and
concerns.”
The director will oversee more
than 850 employees, an operating
budget of $25 million and the ser
vice of 23,000 meals and snacks
each day.
The director’s position opened
in 1993 when Robert Smith, for
mer vice president for Finance
and Administration, reassigned
the director of Food Services,
Lloyd Smith.
Col. Jim Moore, former assis
tant director for Board Dining,
and George Nedbalek, former
business manager of Food Ser
vices, were also reassigned.
The three have said that al
though they were given no reason
for the reassignments, they be
lieve they were reassigned be
cause of their opposition to
Robert Smith’s plan to privatize
Food Services.
The men filed grievances with
the University in January 1994,
asking to be reinstated.
Dr. J. Malon Southerland,
vice president of Student Af
fairs, denied the grievances in
December and assigned Dr. Jer
ry Gaston, interim vice presi
dent for Finance and Adminis
tration, to meet with the men
about their reassignments.
In January, Lloyd Smith and
Nedbalek sued Texas A&M Uni
versity, the Texas A&M Universi
ty System and three A&M admin
istrators for more than $1 million.
The suit named Beard,
Robert Smith, who became ex
ecutive director of special oper
ations, and Rick Floyd, associ
ate vice president for Finance
and Administration.
Moore, who was not part of
the lawsuit, said he would like
to give the University’s new ad
ministration a chance to ex
plain his reassignment.
Moore said he will more than
likely apply for the director’s
position.
“I probably will apply,”
Moore said. “As soon as I re
ceive the requirements, and if I
meet the requirements — and I
have no idea why I wouldn’t —
I plan on applying.”
Bisor said the committee will
closely scrutinize the candidates
because of the controversy Food
Services has faced.
“We want someone who can ad
dress the issues that have come
up,” Bisor said. “We want to iden
tify candidates who can help us
work on our weaknesses and
build on our strengths.”
