Aggies
Continued from Page 7
they’re shooting the ball
well,” Barone said. “I think
they’re underrated a little
bit defensively.
“You can talk about how
many points they score and
that’s always an issue, but I
think defensively they’re a
pretty good team.”
The Aggies face a daunting
task in shutting down TCU’s
Kurt Thomas. The 6’ 9” cen
ter is the nation’s leading re
bounder averaging 13.8
boards a game and is second
in the country in scoring with
a 28.8 average.
“Th ey have a premiere
player in Thomas who gives
them a lot of things in the
middle beyond just being a
scorer,” Barone said. “He’s a
very good shot blocker and
he’s a good defender because
of his size.
“He’s in a system that al
lows him to play a little more
free and run up and down the
court the way he would like to
play. He’s a great player and
a tough guy to stop.”
Barone said that stopping
Thomas is a priority, but
TCU’s potent outside shooting
duo of Michael Thoele and
Jeff Jacobs cannot go unchal
lenged either.
“Thomas is a guy that you
have to focus in on, but I don’t
subscribe to the theory of let
ting him get his points and
stopping everybody else,”
Barone said. “So, we have to
do some things to keep him
off rhythm and not let him get
easy baskets.
“I don’t think you can
give this team three-point
shots unmolested, either.
Thoele and Jacobs can bury
the three.”
Freshman point-guard Kyle
Kessel said beating TCU’s full-
court press is essential for an
Aggie upset.
“I think we need to
limit our turnovers under
their press and play solid
defense the whole way,”
Kessel said.
Barone believes his squad is
ready to shine on the road.
“The kids have played hard
and everyone’s making a big
deal out of whether you win or
lose on the road,” Barone said.
“To win the championship in
any league, you have to win
road games, so I think we’ll be
prepared to play TCU.”
Lady Ags
Continued from Page 7
“I think we still need to im
prove in rebounding,” Harvey
said. “That is an area we should
dominate because of our
size(but), statistically we
haven’t done as well in that
area as we should.”
Another asset to the Lady
Aggie game plan is the ability to
substitute. The A&M bench has
outscored the opposing bench in
13 of 16 games.
Sophomore Marianne Miller
came off the bench last Satur
day against Houston to lead the
team with 26 points and six re
bounds.
“Every night each player can
step up and score the points,”
Miller said. “We have great
shooters, so everyone can con
tribute. That night it just hap
pened to be me.”
Harvey agrees with Miller
about the versatility of the team.
“We have quality players at
all positions,” Harvey said. “On
any given night either a starter
or someone on the bench can
score a given amount of points
like Miller did.
“So when people are sitting
there doing scouting reports on
us, they can’t just worry about
five people, they have to worry
about almost 14.”
