Chargers
prepare to
face 49ers
MIAMI (AP) — To all the
detractors and doomsayers
who predict San Diego has
no chance in the Super
Bowl, the Chargers declare:
Pile it on!
Boad them down with the
ballast of recent AFC fail
ures. Stack on the record 19-
point spread. Throw them
up against perhaps the best
team of the Super Bowl era.
For good measure, add in a
recent rout at the hands of
that opponent, the San
Francisco 49ers.
Then watch them quiver.
Well, not exactly. Not
only aren’t the Chargers
apologizing for making
their first Super Bowl, not
only are they expecting to
make a game of it, but they
are talking about winning
the thing, something no
AFC team has managed in
a decade.

people’s faces as irate fans in
overcrowded stadiums attempt
ed to storm soccer fields, only to
meet a 20-foot tall fence and
their death sentence.
Sports, from Little League to
the professional level, need to be
put into proper perspective.
Now, don’t get me wrong.
There is nothing wrong with
supporting your favorite team.
The moral fallacy occurs when a
fan blatantly steps past the lim
its of the sidelines and takes de
feat personally, causing the end
to a life or serious injury to an
other person.
Remember when you
performed below your expecta
tions playing for the local
sports league?
Your coach and your parents
would remind you that,
“It’s only a game.” That atti
tude seems to have been lost 1
since the Little League days.
Will someone please explain
this insanity?
Just look up the road to Lub
bock. When a few Texas Tech
fans jumped out of the stands af
ter the A&M men’s basketball
team and a melee occurred caus
ing injury to fans, players and
coaches alike.
The good will underlying the
sports world from the begin
ning of time was meant to
bring peace between nations
and unity among all people,
not division.
The old saying, “Be a good
sport,” may not be dead, but vic
tims of reckless fans are.
Competition is one thing,
fan loyalty, when it goes be
yond the respect for human
life, is quite another.
Veterans
Continued from Page 9
concessions that will finally
give one side or another
some leverage.”
The foundation of the
strike resulted from the dis
parity in the amount of money
made by the smaller market
teams in comparison to the
larger markets.
The players are in favor of
revenue-sharing between
teams in order to close the
monetary gap, while the own
ers are adamant upon insti
tuting a salary cap, along the
lines of those already imple
mented by the NBA and NFL.
Dierker likened the situa
tion of the small-nYarket
teams to being on the wrong
end of a game of cards.
“We have got to find a way
for those eight to 10 smaller
teams to be in a position to
survive, “ Dierker said. “It’s
like playing poker without
enough chips.
“It doesn’t matter how good
a player you are, you’re still
going to lose.”
Replacements
Continued from Page 9
Collins said he is anxious to
for the strike to be over be
cause of the blockbuster trade
the Astros made with the San
Diego Padres in December. A
total of 1 1 players were ex
changed in the deal.
“We lost some really good
players in Cammy (Ken
Caminiti) and (Steve) Finley,”
Collins said. “But I’m excited
about the players we got.
Derek Bell and Phil Plantier
should fit in well.”
