FORT WORTH (AP) — Dallas
Cowboys defensive coordinator
Butch Davis says he’s talking to
three organizations — the Los
Angeles Raiders, the Philadel
phia Eagles and the University
of Miami — about becoming a
head coach.
Speaking for the first time
about the three-way coaching
courtship, Davis told the Fort
Worth Star-Telegram in Sunday
editions that he’s gone as far as
negotiating a contract with the
Hurrichnes.
“We’ve got three very inviting
situations, and things are mov
ing quickly,” Davis said Satur
day. “It’s a giant jigsaw puzzle
and we’re trying to put all these
little pieces together.”
Davis said he was arranging
second interviews this week
with the Raiders and Miami
and an initial interview with
the Eagles.
With the Raiders, Davis al
ready has assembled a proposed
staff for owner A1 Davis’ ap
proval, the newspaper reported.
No more than two Cowboys as
sistants are on that list, which is
topped by defensive assistant
Mike Zimmer.
“This is where we’ve gotten
the furthest along as far as con
templating all the scenarios,”
the Cowboys’ coordinator said.
“But maybe that’s just because
they talked to me first.”
Davis’ second interview with
Miami will include contract
talks, as did his Friday night
session with athletic director
Paul Dee. Davis said he was
aware of reports of a guaranteed
three-year, $2.1 million package
at the school.
“There are some attractive
things about that situation,”
said Davis, adding that he
wants to know more about the
possibility Miami could be put
on NCAA probation. “I’m hear
ing conflicting things, and I need
to get the truth.”
The Eagles were attempting
to set up an interview with
Davis for Thursday in Miami,
but he wants that meeting with
owner Jeffrey Lurie moved up.
“I don’t know when I’ll be
able to see the Eagles,” Davis
said. “But I do need to find out if
it is legitimate interest on their
part.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is
already moving to protect his
coaching staff in anticipation of
Davis’ departure. He has indi
cated faith in defensive assis
tant Jim Eddy, who could be
promoted to coordinator.
“I’ve made tentative deals
with three of the six assistants
who are up, and I should have
most done by Monday,” Jones
said. “As for Jim filddy, he’s
very talented, and very impor
tant to us.”

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke
basketball coach Mike
Krzyzewski, recovering from
back surgery, will not coach
again this season.
Athletic director Tom Butters
said Sunday the 47-year-old
coach will return to for the 1995-
96 season.
Physicians, university offi
cials and Krzyzewski agreed
that to rush his recovery and
rehabilitation from surgery and
exhaustion would not be in the
best interests of the coach or
the school.
Krzyzewski underwent back
surgery on Oct. 22 for a dis
placed disc. Instead of taking
the standard time off for reha
bilitation, he went back to work
in preparation for the season in
about two weeks.
Two days after the Blue
Devils lost their Atlantic Coast
Conference season opener to
Clemson, Krzyzewski com
plained of exhaustion and was
admitted to Duke University
Hospital on Jan. 6.
On Jan. 10, Krzyzewski was
released from the hospital with
instructions not to have any con
tact with the basketball team or
any other administrative re
sponsibilities. Originally, the
school said he would not return
for several weeks.
When Krzyzewski left, the
Blue Devils were 9-3. The
team, now under the direction
of assistant coach Pete Gaudet,
has lost six straight games, its
longest losing streak in 56
years. Gaudet has coached five
of them.
Krzyzewski, Duke’s all-time
winningest coach, met with the
players and coaching staff Sun
day afternoon to inform them of
the decision.
“Coach K is a Duke treasure
and we want to take care of our
treasures,” Duke president Nan
Keohane said Sunday. “We all
miss him and look forward to
having him back next year, but
we also want him to take the time
he needs to get better.”
Krzyzewski said while he
feels he’s made good progress in
the last two weeks, to return
without the proper time commit
ment would hurt the program.
“The indecision of when I
would return should be put to
rest so the team can move for
ward,” Krzyzewski said.

Streak
“I like to think of the oppo
nent and visualize making pass
es,” Kessel said. “Just thinking
of the other team will help me
play like I’m at home.”
Junior college transfer John
Stevens, coming off a season-high
15 point performance against
Houston Saturday, said focus and
rest will aid the Aggies to victory
against the Saints.
“Basically, we need to make
sure that we have enough rest,”
Stevens said. “We need to stay
focused on the game and don’t
allow the fans to take us out of
the game.”
Guard Corey Henderson,
who made six of nine three-
pointers for 18 points against
Houston, agrees with Stevens
that the team will need to be
mentally prepared.
We need to go up and stay fo
cused,” Henderson said. “We
have to come home with a win in
order to keep our confidence lev
el up through the rest of the con
ference games.”
Henderson said he will not
hesitate to take the three-point
shot against Siena if it becomes
available.
“They were falling against
Houston,” Henderson said. “We
need to go up to Siena and step
it up.”
Two of Siena’s players who
A&M will need to hold in check
are senior center Matt Gras and
sophomore guard Andy Thies.
Gras is averaging 15.1
points and 6.5 rebounds per
game and is coming off a 13
point and five rebound perfor
mance versus Manhattan at
home last weekend.
Thies is averaging 12.0
points per game and hitting
close to 50 percent from behind
the three-point line. Thies will
need to be contained as a re
sult of his 17 point perfor
mance against Manhattan on
Saturday.
The Aggies will continue
their road trek when they face
Texas Christian University on
Saturday in Fort Worth and
then travel to Dallas to face
Southern Methodist University
on January 31.
