Ethernet is a system that al- ows users to receive and use omputer software without hone lines. With an Ethernet ;ard, students can access a wide ariety of services, including the ntemet and e-mail. Last summer, Ethernet con- lections were made in all of the ■ooms in Moore, Keathly, Legett, ,echner, McFadden and Dunn alls and Dorm 2 as a test to iee how Ethernet was utilized ind to gain student feedback. In early December, the Ether- et Task Force made a proposal ;o the Residence Life staff that thernet be placed in all re aming halls gradually over ive years, by adding six or seven |halls each year. According to the proposal, 96 onnections were used in the eight dorms. Barry McKinney, head of the Ethernet Task Force, said that al though Ethernet was not widely used, support for it was strong. “Those who knew what Ether net was were excited about it,” McKinney said. Butch Kemper, project man ager, said that one reason for the low number of Ethernet users was a lack of preparation by the students. “A lot of folks were not pre pared,” Kemper said. “I think a lot of people went home over the holidays and got the cards over connections were made over the summer, some halls were not brought on-line until late in the fall semester. "One hall wasn’t brought on line until mid-November,” McKin ney said. “By then, people could n’t get cards but may have had in tentions of getting one. Also, by late in the semester, some peo- "You're given the same access as if you were in one of the open computer labs." — Dave Safford director of computing information services Christmas. We expect to see more use this semester.” Ethernet cards, which are must be inserted into the com puter to use the Ethernet con nections cost about $100. McKinney pointed to two oth er problems that could have af fected the figures in the propos al. He said many people either were not aware that the connec tions were put in their room or didn’t know what Ethernet was. He said that although the pie’s funds were low, and they couldn’t afford to get a card.” Aside from the lack of knowl edge about Ethernet, McKinney said there is only one other drawback to the residence hall connections. He said that as more halls are brought on-line, a small additional charge will be added to the rent. The fee will be no larger than $2 a month. “The $2 charge is probably on the high end,” McKinney said. “Because Ethernet is new and no other universities have it, it’s hard to track how much it will cost.” Dave Safford, director of com puting information services in charge of networking and super computing, said Ethernet has several advantages over the traditional phone lines. “There had been terrific con gestion on the phone lines,” Saf ford said. “Ethernet gives stu dents better access, essentially guaranteed access. Ethernet also has much higher speed.” In addition to Internet and e- mail, Safford said that a variety of software is accessible through Ethernet, including NOTIS, class notes and general resources across campus. “You’re given the same access as if you were in one of the open computer labs,” Safford said. Currently, the Ethernet pro posals are awaiting approval from the RHA and staff councils. Dan Mizer, assistant director of resi dence life for facilities and opera tions, said that after both bodies review the proposals and make recommendations, the Residence Life staff will act. “We will get their feedback and make any necessary changes,” Mizer said. “Right now, we’ll just wait and hear.” What’s Up KH8WWMM8WS88W388888 it but skills i sd work| !
