Gypsy’s adoptive parents
deal with identity problems
NEW YORK (AP) — Short
ly after Paula Fishman adopt
ed a 5-year-old Gypsy girl from
Hungary, she asked her
daughter if she was a Gypsy.
The little girl looked
shocked and said, “Oh, no,
I’m English.” Questioned
again, she hung her head in
shame. She told her mother
that Gypsies were bad peo
ple, stupid and dirty with
ugly dark skin.
In the three years since,
Fishman has tried hard to
help her daughter, Jenny, feel
pi'oud of who she is.
Thousands of Americans
have adopted Gypsy children
in recent years, most from
Romania.
“For the most part, the
adoptive parents are bewil
dered by what to do with the
child’s ethnicity,” says Mary
Thomas of Alexandria, Va.,
who heads the parent organi
zation, Romanian Children’s
Connection.
Fishman says she was ad
vised by the Hungarian or
phanage not to tell Jenny she
was a Gypsy, and the transla
tor helping her with the adop
tion arrangements warned
her not to let the girl start ly
ing or stealing — stereotypi
cal Gypsy behavior.
Thomas says some parents
choose to hide that the chil
dren are Gypsies, either be
cause it is easier or because
they believe they are protect
ing them.
For others, the question is
how to give their children a
positive sense of cultural iden
tity, especially when Gypsies
are so often portrayed as fairy
tale characters or thieves. In
the story Pinocchio, for in
stance, the boy-like marionette
is stolen by a Gypsy.
They start by calling their
children Roma instead of
Gypsies, which many consider
derogatory. The English word
is based on the mistaken be
lief that Gypsies came from
Egypt, when in fact they came
from northwest India.
Fishman found a movie that
gives a realistic portrayal of
Roma, but Jenny did not want
to go because she thought they
were “scary.” She eventually
went and was surprised to
learn that Gypsies were not
such bad people.
One day, her mother says,
she may thank her Gypsy par
ents for her musical gifts. Jen
ny, now 8, takes dance and vio
lin lessons and is showing nat
ural talent for both.
When Fishman decided to
adopt, she chose Hungary be
cause it was one of the few
countries that would give a
child to a 46-year-old di
vorced woman. She chose a
Gypsy because of a “feeling
of some connection.”
Jenny entered the orphan
age when she was 18 months
old and like any abandoned
child she struggles with the
feeling that her parents did
not want her. Fishman says
Jenny once asked what was
wrong with her and whether
she smelled bad as a baby.
Unlike in Hungary, where
her copper skin stamped her
as a Gypsy, Jenny has met no
discrimination in New York
and feels at home here in the
world’s melting pot.
