Page 8 • The Battalion Spurs suspend Rodman, again SAN ANTONIO (AP)-The San Antonio Spurs suspended forward Dennis Rodman Wednesday for the second time this season when he failed to re turn from a 3 1/2-week paid leave of absence. Coach Bob Hill said Rodman called at practice time Wednesday morning and said he was in Dal las. He said Rodman told him someone stole the keys to a friend’s truck from Rodman's pocket and that some of Rodman's possessions also were stolen. “I have no understandingot why he was not at practice or where he was today,” Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich said at a news confer ence. “The excuse was not ac ceptable, if that’s what you’re wondering.” The 33-year-old Rodman, known for his changing hair color and his erratic behavior both on and off the court, led the league last season in re bounding, averaging 17.3 per game. But he hasn’t playeda game this season. The Spurs (7-8) suspended Rodman for a series of presea son incidents that culminated with his tossing a bag of ice and getting ejected fromthefi nal preseason game. After the suspension, Rodman and team officials agreed he would take a paid leave of absence, which began Nov. 12. Both the Spurs and Rodman agreed that the leave of absence would end Tuesday, and Rod- man was to show up for Wednesday’s team meeting and practice, Popovich said. “We have no choice but to change his status to suspended without pay,” he said. There had been reports that part of the agreement for the leave of the absence was for Rodman to see a psychiatrist. Popovich confirmed that the leave did have some “guide lines” but would not elaborate, He did say Rodman had fulfilled those requirements. “I haven’t seen the guy. He hasn’t returned yet. So it’spret ty tough to tell whether he has made strides.” Popovich said Rodmaa’s sta tus could change whenever he returns to the team and meets with team officials, but gave no time frame for that happening. “We wish he was a produc tive part of our team, on the court,” Popovich said. The general manager said he has made no overtures to trade Rodman. “I think it’s premature to trade him and give that up,” he said. But Popovich admitted that dealing with the temperamental star has been frustrating. “Let’s be honest. He’s a pain in the ass. Is that quotable enough? We don’t like it, the fans don’t like it. It’s a royal pain in the neck,” he said. Rodman missed a team bus and meeting at the start of training camp, was late to an exhibition game in which he wasn’t expected to play, and then was ejected from the Spurs’ final exhibition game, Then, after serving out his three-game suspension, he didn't show up for practice the next day. All the time, Rodman was saying he still wants to play, “It’s no big deal, I’d like to play, give people what they want on the floor,” he told reporters. “Popovich told me I have to grow up. I don’t think that was a fair statement. I guess I have to go back to kindergarten and learn my ABCs. But that does n’t prove who is a child and who is a man,” Rodman said during the brouhaha caused by the fail ure to show up. “It’ll come out sooner or lat er,” Rodman said last month af ter a half-hour meeting with Popovich. “I want to resolve it, I’m not trying to prove any thing. I’m not asking them to give in or do anything.” ExCET REVIEWS 512-474-5750 HOUSTON REVIEWS January 14 & 15, 1995 Deadline: Dec. 19, 1994 AUSTIN REVIEWS January 28 & 29,1995 Deadline: Jan. 9, 1995 Pa Ave reg; tie and b It’s no has so m enue is a that stuf - but rat and buse way nort They < it never, passenge gets clea ways sta hours aft know by routed oi The er I gues enue eve everyone when Err remains, starts, th T Beli M J.
