Georgandis
Continued From Page 7
When I handed in the
first draft to my editor, I
was apprehensive as to
what he was going to say,
At the same time, however,
I was feeling somewhat
sure of myself...
About three days later,
the first issue of The Batt
came out. Anxiously I
searched for my gem. After
leafing through the football
preview section, I found it.
As I sat in the Commons
reading my story, the ex
pression on my face
changed from happiness to
astonishment to anger,
That wasn’t my story. That
was my editor’s story with
my byline. Feeling like a
failure, I contemplated my
future as a sportswriter.
Should I quit? They
wouldn’t even miss me if I
did. Fumbling through my
jumbled list of phone num
hers, I called the man who
would soon become my best
friend at The Battalion, Nick
Georgandis.
Georgandis and I were in
the same boat at The Batt.
He too was a young and
naive beginner. He too had
been All-World at his high
school paper. He too real
ized that The Batt was much
different from his high
school paper. He too saw his
byline that day on a story
that he clearly did not write.
Georgandis came over.
(He lived in Aston and I
lived in Dunn). We bitched
and sulked about our Battal
ion debuts over a couple of
games of John Madden Foot
ball. Reeling from the dis
gust I felt after reading The
Battalion that morning, and
reeling from the disgust I
felt after eating an entire
Gumby’s pizza that after
noon, I decided to call The
Battalion and give the sports
editors a piece of my mind...
When William Harrison,
one of the two sports editors,
answered the phone, I
thought about lighting into
him like Buddy Ryan into
Kevin Gilbride. But I didn't.
My better judgment caught
up with me, and I merely
asked him about my story.
Listening attentively, I made
my mind up to work on be
coming a better writer, the
best I could be.
Sure there have been
times during the past three
semesters that I have want
ed to give up, quit, and
change my career plans.
Something has kept calling
me back. Maybe it’s the fact
that I get to register early
that keeps me devoted to my
job, or maybe it’s the fact
that I get free food at every
sporting event I cover.
Seriously though, after
working here for a quite a
while, I feel a peculiar bond
with the staff here. When
I’m not working on a prize
winning column or late-
breaking story, I enjoy hang
ing out and watching TV in
the cozy confines of The Bat
talion newsroom.
No longer am I nervous
around the likes of R.C.
Slocum, Antonio Armstrong,
Leeland McElroy, or Tony
Barone (well, maybe
Barone). No longer am I as
giddy as a 13-year old girl in
a room full of college boys
when I’m sitting courtside
at a basketball game or in
the press box at a football
game. One thing has never
changed however, and that’s
my love for writing for the
people at Texas A&M.
In my columns, I have
been able to entertain, in
form, and share some really
personal feelings with the
student body and faculty of
this school. No one really
ever thought you could do
all that with a sports col
umn. With my stories, I
have been able to report on
countless sporting events
and sports figures.
My passions have endured
some changes, however, and
whether you care or not, I’d
like to inform you that I will
not be writing for the sports
page next semester. It’s not
that I don’t like sports any
more. Not that at all! I just
need a change of pace.
I still love to write, and
you’ll just have to pick up
the first couple of issues of
The Battalion next semes
ter to locate me at my new
address. I’d tell you where
it is, but I haven’t been
hired to write there yet, and
I don’t want to jinx myself.
