Texas school celebrates
25th anniversary of
civil rights protest
CRYSTAL CITY, Texas — Twenty-five years
ago this Friday, hundreds of Crystal City High
School students walked out of classes and
into history.
Like Rosa Parks’ decision to keep her seat in
the front of that Montgomery, Ala., bus, the
month-long boycott of this South Texas school
system by Mexican-American students was a
turning point in the civil rights struggle in Texas.
The walkout over how cheerleaders were se
lected gave birth the following year to La Raza
Unida (The Race United) and set the stage for its
election sweep of local political offices a few
months later. La Raza remained a viable political
group for less than a decade, but its its statewide
expansion in the early 1970s sliced into the De
mocratic Party’s voter base and gave Texa
Republicans a boost toward building
two-party state.
Many students who took part in that piece
history that unfolded here more than two decade
ago remain today as adults in this small to» :
alongside U.S. 83 about a two-hour drive soutl
west of San Antonio.
